In high school, a friend of D'wayne joked that the teacher would call him "Tony, Tony, Tony" if they saw the way he was dressed. Originally, the band went by "Tony, Tony, Tony" as a joke, until they realized it had a nice ring to it.

Die Tonies verbanden auf frische Weise zeitgenössische R&B-Rhythmen aus dem Rechner mit "handgemachter" Soulmusik und traten bei Konzerten grundsätzlich als Band auf (kein Playback, keine Tanz-Choreografien). 1988 wurde mit Who? ihr Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Die Single Little Walter erreichte Platz 1 der R&B-Charts. 1990 erschien das Platinumalbum The Revival und lieferte nicht weniger als vier Nr. 1 - Hits in den amerikanischen R&B-Charts. 1993 steigerte die Band mit ihrem dritten Album Sons of Soul den Verkaufserfolg nochmals. Das Album verkaufte allein in den USA über zwei Millionen Einheiten und bekam eine Grammynominierung. 1996 hatten sich jedoch die Brüder Wiggins so weit entzweit, dass mit House of Music ihr viertes und bisher letztes Album erscheinen sollte. 1997 löste sich die Band auf. D'Wayne Wiggins arbeitete in der Folge einige Zeit in der Musikindustrie als A&R Manager, verschaffte unter anderem der texanischen Mädchenband Destiny's Child ihren zum Durchbruch führenden Plattenvertrag bei Columbia Records, und veröffentlichte im Jahr 2000 ein Soloalbum. Raphael kam zwar erst 2001 mit einem ersten Soloalbum heraus, war aber in der Zwischenzeit zu einem der erfolgreichsten und gefragtesten Produzenten im R&B-Bereich geworden. Er gewann in der Zwischenzeit mehrere Grammys. 2004 erschien der Bandname noch einmal auf dem Album The Diary of Alicia Keys beim Song Diary. D'Wayne spielte Gitarre, Timothy Riley arbeitete am Schlagzeug mit. Die Single ist mit Platz 6 der allgemeinen Billboardcharts der größte Crossover-Hit für Tony! Toni! Toné. 2006 hatten sich die persönlichen Differenzen der drei Gründer soweit gelegt, dass sie erstmals seit Jahren wieder gemeinsam auf eine kleine Tournee gingen.
