- Cathryn Antoinette "Toni" Tennille (b. May 8, 1940, in Montgomery, Alabama) is one-half of the 1970s Grammy Award winning duo Captain & Tennille. Toni has also done musical work independently of her husband Daryl Dragon. Tennille has a contralto vocal range. Toni Tennille was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, as part of a family of entertainers. Her father, Frank Tennille, was a "big band" singer with "Bob Crosby and the Bobcats" and her mother, Cathryn Tennille, was a local television pioneer, being the hostess of Montgomery’s first daytime TV talk show. Toni’s musical sisters, Jane, Louisa, and Melissa, all sang on her variety TV shows, as well as on the Captain & Tennille albums. Toni began her career studying classical piano at Auburn University and singing with the university's big band, the "Auburn Knights". Toni sang backup vocals on Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and she also did backup singing for Sir Elton John's recordings: performing on at least three Elton John albums, including "Caribou", "Blue Moves", "21 At 33" and most notably (and prominently) on the rock song "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". Toni is 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm) tall. She married Kenneth Shearer in June 1962; they divorced in 1972. Toni married Daryl Dragon on 11 November 1975; they now live in Prescott, Arizona. Toni Tennille could be considered to be the only female member of the Beach Boys. She toured with the Beach Boys during the 1970s with her husband Daryl, both playing Keyboard for the group. In 1988, Toni appeared in the Broadway Musical Stardust along with Sean Young and Hinton Battle in Los Angeles, CA. Set designs and costumes for Stardust were done by the famous art deco artist Erte.
