It descended from Emperor Seiwa by Minamoto no Yorimitsu from the Minamoto clan (Seiwa genji) and used Toki in Mino Province as their hometown. The family adhered to Zen Buddhist beliefs and founded many temples, including Shōhō-ji, which contains the Gifu Great Buddha, and Sōfuku-ji in the city of Gifu.

Ses descendants étaient en 1868 Daimyo de Numata (province de Kozuke).
  • 土岐氏（ときし）は、鎌倉時代から江戸時代にかけて栄えた武家。本姓は源氏。清和天皇を祖とする清和源氏の一流　摂津源氏の流れを汲み、美濃源氏の嫡流として美濃国を中心に栄えた。室町時代から戦国時代にかけて美濃国守護を務め、最盛期には美濃、尾張、伊勢の三ヶ国の守護大名となった。 土岐氏は美濃国のみならず常陸、上総など関東に点在した他、美濃国内には明智氏、土井氏、金森氏、蜂屋氏、肥田氏など多くの庶流が輩出された。 家紋は水色桔梗紋で、白黒紋でなく彩色紋として知られる。、土岐光衡が戦争で桔梗花を兜に挟んで戦ったのを記念して、家紋としたのが始まりである。「土岐桔梗」と呼ばれている。 現在も地名で、岐阜県土岐市や瑞浪市土岐町などゆかりの地名があり、土岐市の市の花は、桔梗である。
