- Als Todd-AO bezeichnet man in der Filmtechnik ein Filmformat, das bis Mitte der 1950er Jahre von Michael Todd zusammen mit der American Optical Company entwickelt wurde. Das Todd-AO-Verfahren nutzt wie Cinerama eine gewölbte Leinwand mit Abmessungen von wenigstens 17 m × 7,2 m. Man verwendet 70-mm-Film mit der Bildfrequenz von ursprünglich 30 Bildern pro Sekunde. Das Kameranegativ-Filmmaterial ist 65-mm-Film, von dem auf 70-mm-Film mit vier Magnetpisten, darauf sechs Tonspuren, kopiert wird. Ein bei der Firma Philips neu konzipierter Filmprojektor für dieses Format ist mit seiner Typenbezeichnung D(ouble) P(rojector) 70(-35) in die Kino-Geschichte eingegangen. Der erste Todd-AO-Film war 1955 die Musicalverfilmung „Oklahoma!“ von Fred Zinnemann. Der Film wurde in zwei Versionen veröffentlicht: Die 70-mm-Version in Todd-AO mit 30 Bildern pro Sekunde und die 35-mm-Version in CinemaScope mit 24 Bildern pro Sekunde, die erst nach der Todd-AO-Fassung spät 1956 in die Kinos kam. Auch der zweite Film im Todd-AO-Verfahren, „In 80 Tagen um die Welt“ (Around the World in Eighty Days) von Regisseur Michael Anderson, wurde noch mit 30 Bildern pro Sekunde gedreht, alle späteren Filme nach dem Verkauf des Systems an Centfox nur noch mit 24. Das erste Todd-AO-Kino in Europa wurde in Deutschland gebaut. Es handelte sich dabei um das Savoy-Kino am Hamburger Steindamm. Die offizielle Eröffnung fand am 14. März 1957 statt. Der Eröffnungsfilm war damals jedoch „nur“ ein normaler CinemaScope-35-mm-Farbfilm: „Roter Staub“ (The Brave One). Der Demonstrationsfilm „Das Wunder von Todd-AO“ wurde aber damals bereits auf der großen gekrümmten Leinwand (20 m × 8,5 m) im Beiprogramm gezeigt. Das Kino existierte seit 1998 nur noch als ein „Geisterkino“. Im Foyer befand sich ein orientalischer Schnäppchenmarkt. Seit dem 14. August 2008 wird das „Savoy“-Kino wieder bespielt. Das Hamburger kommunale Kino „Metropolis“ nutzt das „Savoy“ als Exil. Das Karlsruher Kino Schauburg veranstaltet seit 2005 jährlich ein Todd-AO 70mm-Festival.
