Tjeldsund was separated from the municipality of Lødingen in 1909. Villages in Tjeldsund include Fjelldal and Ramsund. Norges Brannskole (The Norwegian education and training center for firemen) is situated in the municipality. Marinejegerkommandoen is based at Ramsund.
