- Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry was a Hungarian painter. He was one of the first Hungarian painters to become well-known in Europe. Csontváry was born 5 July 1853 in Kisszeben, Sáros County, Kingdom of Hungary, and died 20 June 1919 in Budapest. He was a pharmacist until his twenties. On a hot sunny afternoon, 13 October 1880, — when he was 27 years old — he experienced a mystic vision. He heard a voice saying "you will be the greatest sunway painter, greater than Raphael!" He took journeys around Europe, visited the galleries of the Vatican, then went home to collect money for his journeys working as an apothecary. From 1890 onwards he traveled around the world. He visited Paris, the Mediterraneum, North Africa and the Middle East and painted pictures. He painted his major works between 1903 and 1909. He had some exhibitions in Paris (1907) and Western Europe. Most of the critics in Western Europe recognized his abilities, art and congeniality, but in Hungary during his life he was considered to be an eccentric crank for several reasons, e. g. for his vegetarianism, anti-alcoholism, anti-nicotinism, pacifism, his latent, but more and more apparent schizophrenia and his cloudy, prophetic writings and pamphlets about his life (Curriculum), genius (The Authority, The Genius) and religious philosophy (The Positivum). Even though later he was acclaimed, during his lifetime Csontváry's visionary, expressionistic style found little understanding. A loner by nature, the master's mental balance was upset by his “failure” impairing his creative power. Little did he know that some years after his death, an entire museum in Pécs, Hungary, would be devoted to his paintings, and that worldwide appreciation of his works would be in constant ascendancy. Many painters, e.g. Picasso added a stone to Csontváry's cairn. He painted more than one hundred pictures, the most famous and emblematic of which is probably Magányos cédrus (The Lonely Cedar). His art connects with post-impressionism and expressionism, but actually he was an autodidact and cannot be classified into an exact style — he regarded himself as one of the "sunway"-painters (this word was created by him). He was one of the most eccentric and most considerable Hungarian painters.

Studium malířství započal až ve svých 40 letech v Mnichově, později v nich pokračoval v Karlsruhe. Vydal se na cesty po Itálii, Dalmácii a Maďarsku a studoval krajinomalbu. Poté se vydává na Blízký východ a hledá své Velké téma. V roce 1907 vystavuje poprvé v Paříži. Západoevropští umělci uznávali jeho talent, ale doma v umělecky zkostnatělých Uhrách nepřesvědčil. Až dlouho po jeho smrti mu bylo otevřeno muzeum v jihomaďarské Pécsi a některé malby umístěny v budapešťské Národní galerii. Umírá zklamán nepochopením, sužován schizofrenií a v posledních letech svého života se věnuje pouze ztvárňování svých surrealisticko-schizofrenních vizí. Jeho dílo se vyznačuje nezaměnitelným rukopisem, velmi osobitým vnímáním světla a monumentalitou. Úspěch na mezinárodní scéně zaznamenal maďarský film Csontváry, natočený roku 1980 Zoltánem Huszárikem.

Farmacéutico de profesión, a los 27 años se inició en la pintura tras una visión mística que le reveló que sería un gran pintor. Desde 1890 realizó un largo viaje por el Mediterráneo, el norte de África y el Oriente Medio. Aunque su arte empezó a ser reconocido, su carácter solitario, su progresiva esquizofrenia y sus delirios religiosos le llevaron a alejarse de la sociedad. Pintó más de un centenar de imágenes, destacando su emblemático Cedro solitario (1907). Su arte conectó con el postimpresionismo y el expresionismo, aunque fue un autodidacta y su estilo es difícilmente clasificable. Aún así ha pasado a la Historia como uno de los más importantes pintores húngaros.

Utazásokat is tett, jelentősebb képeit Keleten festette. Mintegy száz nagyobb művet alkotott. Míg külföldi kiállításairól a legnagyobb kritikusok elismerően nyilatkoztak, itthon nemigen ismerték el. Ehhez különc életvitele, és – élete vége felé egyre kifejezettebb – látnoki-prófétai allűrjei is hozzájárultak, melyeket a képeit elemzők közül többen pszichopatológiásnak tartanak. Művészetét az expresszionizmushoz, illetve posztimpresszionizmushoz kapcsolják, de igazából nem tartozott egyik elhatárolható irányzatba sem. Az egyik legkülöncebb, de egyben legegyénibb és rendkívül jelentős magyar művész volt.

Il 13 ottobre 1880, durante un soleggiato pomeriggio - aveva 27 anni - ebbe l'esperienza di una visione mistica. Sentì una voce che diceva "Sarai il più grande pittore, migliore di Raffaello". Iniziò così un viaggio per l'Europa, visitò le gallerie del Vaticano, quindi tornò a casa per metter da parte i soldi necessari per i suoi viaggi, lavorando come farmacista. Dal 1890 in poi viaggiò per tutto il mondo. Visitò Parigi, il Mediterraneo, il Nordadrica ed il Medio Oriente e dipinse. Realizzò i suoi maggiori lavori tra il 1903 e il 1909. Ebbe alcune esibizioni a Parigi e nell'Europa occidentale. La maggior parte delle critiche riconoscevano le sue abilità, la sua arte e la congenialità, ma in Ungheria, durante la sua vita, fu considerato essere un tipo eccentrico per varie ragioni, ad esempio per il suo vegetarismo, anti-alchoolismo, anti-niconitismo, pacifismo, per il suo talento ma soprattutto per la sua apparente schizofrenia ed i suoi ombrosi, profetici scritti e pamphlet sulla sua vita (Curriculum), sul suo genio (L'Autorità, Il Genio) e la sua religione filosofica (Il Positivismo). Anche se poi fu acclamato, durante la sua vita visionaria ed il suo stile espressionista non trovò comprensione. Un solitario di natura, il suo equilibrio mentale venne meno al suo iniziale fallimento e ciò si riscontrò nella sua creatività. Poco seppe, pochi anni prima della sua morte, riguardo l'intero museo a Pécs, Ungheria, devoto ai suoi dipinti e che l'apprezzamento mondiale delle sue opere sarebbe stato in costante ascesa. Molti pittori, ad esempio Pablo Picasso, aggiunsero una pietra sul suo cairn. Dipinse più di un migliaio di opere, la cui più famose ed emblematica è probabilmente Magányos cédrus (Il Cedro Solitario). La sua arte si connette con il post-impressionismo e con l'espressionismo, ma effettivamente fu un'autodidatta e non può essere classificato in un esatto stile - egli si considerava come uno dei pittori "sunway" (parola creata da lui). Fu uno dei più eccentrici e considerabili pittori ungheresi.
