- Als Timbales bezeichnet man ein kubanisches Trommelpaar aus einseitig bespannten Metallkesseln (meistens aus Kupfer oder Stahl) ohne Resonanzfell, die an einem Ständer befestigt sind, an dem auch eine oder mehrere Cowbells und anderes Zubehör wie Wood- und Jamblocks befestigt werden. Manchmal gehört ein Crashbecken dazu. Timbales gehören zu den Perkussionsinstrumenten, sind trotz Namensähnlichkeit nicht mit den Kesselpauken oder den Timbal verwandt. Die kleinere und höhere Trommel nennt man „Primero“ oder „Macho“; sie befindet sich rechts. Die größere und tiefere nennt man „Segundo“ oder „Hembra“. Der tonale Abstand der Trommeln liegt meistens zwischen einem Drittel und einem Fünftel. Der Timbalero spielt im Stehen und schlägt das Fell, aber auch die Trommelränder („Cascara“) mit zwei leichten Trommelstöcken. Diese Technik nennt man „Paila“. Die Timbales werden in Cuba oft auch als „Pailas“ bezeichnet. Laut dem kubanischen Schriftsteller Felipe Pichardo Moya (1892–1957) sind „Pailas“ Gefäße aus Stahl oder Kupfer in Form einer „halben Orange“, die in den Rohrzuckerfabriken verwendet wurden um den Rohzuckersaft zu sammeln. Seit etwa Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts sind Timbales wichtiger Bestandteil karibischer Musik, z. B. in Salsa-Combos. Zusätzlich werden sie meistens durch zwei Kuhglocken, einen Jam Block und ein Becken ergänzt. In Kuba werden sie mitunter auch in ein Schlagzeug integriert, indem sie links neben die Hi-Hat gestellt werden. The shells are referred to as el cáscara (the Spanish word for shell) which is also the name of a rhythmic pattern common in salsa music that is played on the shells of the timbales to keep time. The shells are usually made of metal but some manufacturers offer shells made of maple and other woods. The heads are light and tuned fairly high for their size. Timbales is also the French word for timpani, thus the French refer to Cuban timbales as timbales latines. In fact, timbales (as the term is now used) were first used in the early 20th century charangas as a replacement for the standard timpani used in the older form of Cuban orchestras known as típicas.
