  • Thurso (Inbhir Theòrsa in het Schots Gaelic) is een stad in het noordoosten van Schotland. Door de stad stroomt de rivier Thurso die uitmondt in Thurso Bay. Thurso werd gesticht door vikingen die er een belangrijke haven van maakten. De haven werd gebruikt als handelspost voor het noorden. Old St Peters Kirk dateert uit de 13de eeuw. Maar het grootste deel van de stad dateert vanuit de 19de eeuw en het midden van de 20e eeuw toen de regering besloot een kernreactor in Dounreay (15 km in het westen) te plaatsen. Binnen een periode van 10 jaar steeg het bevolkingsaantal van 3000 naar 9000. Die kerncentrale wordt momenteel ontmanteld maar levert toch nog genoeg werk. In Thurso ligt het meest noordelijke station van Groot-Brittannië, station Thurso. Thurso heeft een kleine haven die uitkijkt op Orkney. Twee kilometer ten noordwesten van Thurso in Scrabster vertrekken veerboten naar deze eilandengroep. In het oostelijke deel van Thurso liggen de resten van Thurso Castle.
