The Thuringii or Toringi were a Germanic tribe which appeared late during the Völkerwanderung in the Harz Mountains of central Germania around 280, in a region which still bears their name to this day — Thuringia. They evidently filled a void left when the previous inhabitants — the Alemanni — migrated south to the region named after them, Alemannia. They may have been remnants of the Alemannic confederation, or simply another lesser tribe.

Some have suggested that they were the remnants of the Hermanduri, that last part of whose name (-duri) was corrupted (-thuri) and afterwards suffixed with -ing, meaning "descendants of (the duri)".

Constituée après 453, elle prend les terres d'origines de la confédération des Alamans lorsque cette dernière migre vers le sud. La disparition de l'empire hunnique sur cette zone restitue une autorité propre aux peuples des Warnes et des Angles, qui forment une aristocratie majoritaire parmi les autres. Comme la ligue reste en dehors de l'Empire romain, aucun chroniqueur latin n'en parle; décrire leur protohistoire n'est donc possible que par les cultures archéologiques trouvées sur les terres où ils vécurent. Inévitablement, leur terre portera leur nom de Thuringe par la suite. Compte tenu de la composition de la ligue, ces terres sont vraisemblablement celles du premier duché de Saxe.
