The group released their first album, Nà Vuccà Dò Lupù, in 1992 (before Pall could play guitar) on Cargo/Headhunter. Their next record, Chief Assassin to the Sinister, came out (also on Cargo/Headhunter) in 1994, with a vinyl version being released by Negative Records and then later by Goldenrod Records. Geffen Records took an interest in them and reissued the album but because of internal strife between the band and the label, 3MP left Geffen and returned to Headhunter. They added Tobias Nathaniel on piano/keyboard and released Another Desert, Another Sea in 1997. Several 7" releases followed on various labels, as well as a self-titled EP released on Gravity Records the following year. Songs from the 7" releases and other unreleased tracks were gathered in a 2-CD compilation titled Songs from an old town we once knew, released on Cargo/Headhunter in 1999. 3MP's early work often referenced the cult sci-fi computer game series Star Control, as evidenced by album and song titles such as Star Control Out, "Chenjesu," "The Ur-Quan Destroyer," "Androsyn Guardian," and "Ilwrath. " After an unofficial break-up of sorts following their last album in 1998, Three Mile Pilot have recently reunited, signed to indie major Touch and Go Records, and are actively writing new material for an album to be released in 2009. In 2009 the band switched record labels and is now signed to Temporary Residence Limited with a new album expected in 2010. Armistead Burwell Smith IV's other band, Pinback, also recently made the switch from Touch and Go Records to Temporary Residence Limited. Three Mile Pilot played three sold-out shows at The Casbah on January 18, 19, and 20th of 2009 as part of the venue's 20th anniversary celebration. The line-up included the three original members, Pall Jenkins, Armistead Burwell Smith IV, Tom Zinser, as well as Kenseth Thibideau on keyboards, and Brad Lee on Bass and Guitar. The band toured the west coast in July 2009, it was their first tour in over ten years.
