Jahrhundert wurde hier eine Abtei, das spätere Reichsstift Thorn, gegründet, zu der auch die 992 erbaute romanische Abteikirche gehörte, welche später gotisch renoviert und mit üppiger barocker Innenausstattung versehen wurde. Aus dieser Abtei entstand ein weltliches Stift, ein Orden ohne Gelübde, der nur reichen Damen aus dem Hochadel offen stand, die dort eine gute Erziehung erhielten. Heiratswillige Ordensdamen wohnten außerhalb der Klostermauern. Bis ins 17. Jahrhundert ließen sich viele von ihnen eigene Häuser bauen, die zu einem großen Teil heute noch erhalten sind. Die ganze Altstadt ist mit Steinen aus der Maas gepflastert, angeblich, um die kostbaren Röcke der Stiftsdamen nicht unnötig dem Straßenschmutz auszusetzen. Dieses Stift machte Thorn zu einer wohlhabenden Stadt und war über 800 Jahre Zentrum eines von den Äbtissinnen regierten Fürstentums. Das „Land von Thorn“ hatte zeitweilig sogar eigene Münzen. 1794 marschierten französische Truppen ein, konfiszierten das Stift und beendeten so die Jahrhunderte dauernde weibliche Herrschaft. Die von den Franzosen eingeführte Fenstersteuer, die sich nach der Größe der Fenster bemaß, zwang die Thorner zum Umbau ihrer Häuser. Sie verwendeten dazu die Steine der alten Abtei. Um die unterschiedlichen Größen der Steine zu kaschieren, übertünchten die Thorner die Mauern ihrer Häuser mit weißem Kalk. Dies trug Thorn den Namen „Die weiße Stadt“ ein. Auch heute noch sind die meisten Häuser weiß. Die gesamte Altstadt Thorns, eine Touristenattraktion, steht unter Denkmalschutz. Alljährlich im Sommer findet das Sandskulpturenfestival Thorn statt.
