Theodorus "Theo" van Gogh (1 May, 1857 – 25 January 1891) was a successful art dealer. He was the younger brother of Vincent van Gogh, and Theo's unfailing financial support allowed his brother to devote himself entirely to painting. Theo died at the age of 33 several months after his brother Vincent died at the age of 37.

La notizia del suo suicidio lo sconvolse: dopo essere caduto in assoluta apatia per un mese, ebbe un crollo nervoso completo e venne ricoverato in diverse cliniche per alienati: morirà in una casa di cura a Utrecht il 25 gennaio 1891, appena sei mesi dopo Vincent. Il rapporto tra lui ed il fratello fu molto stretto in ogni circostanza: Vincent credeva in lui e Thèo amava il fratello più di ogni altra cosa. Nei momenti più tristi i due si consultavano e sempre trovavano una soluzione; solo in alcuni momenti della vita di Vincent il pittore rifiutò l'aiuto del fratello perché si trovava un periodo tragico della sua vita. La malattia nervosa e la morte del fratello (quest'ultima assai improvvisa) furono il colpo di grazia per Theo ("... era veramente mio fratello... Non riesco a trovare conforto nelle parole per esprimere il mio dolore, che mi porterò dietro per tutta la vita" scriverà alla madre). L'unione tra i due fratelli proseguirà anche dopo la morte, tanto che, nel 1914, le spoglie di Theo saranno traslate da Utrecht ad Auvers-sur-Oise ed inumate accanto a quelle di Vincent.

  • Theodorus (Theo) van Gogh was een Nederlands kunsthandelaar. Hij was een jongere broer van de schilder Vincent van Gogh. De filmregisseur Theo van Gogh was zijn achterkleinzoon. Van Gogh werd geboren als zoon van predikant Theodorus van Gogh en Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Zijn vier jaar oudere broer Vincent begon in 1872 een geregelde correspondentie met hem. Vincent werkte al enige jaren bij het Haagse filiaal van de kunsthandel Goupil & Cie, toen Theo op 1 januari 1873 jongste bediende werd bij het Brusselse filiaal van deze firma. In juni werd Vincent overgeplaatst naar het filiaal in Londen, en vanaf november van dat jaar werkte Theo in het filiaal te Den Haag. Oorspronkelijk was dit de kunsthandel van hun oom Vincent van Gogh geweest, die vervolgens partner was geworden van de kunsthandel Goupil uit Parijs. Theo ontwikkelde zich tot een succesvol kunsthandelaar en werd overgeplaatst naar het hoofdkantoor van Goupil & Cie in Parijs. Vanaf de winter van 1880-1881 zond hij zijn broer Vincent maandelijks schildersmaterialen en een toelage. De broers onderhielden een intensieve correspondentie waarin Theo zijn zwaarmoedige broer aanmoedigde. Begin 1886 nodigde hij Vincent uit bij hem te komen wonen. Goupil & Cie was inmiddels overgenomen door de schoonzoon van Goupil en heette nu kunsthandel Boussod, Valadon et Cie. Vincent woonde vanaf maart van dat jaar bij Theo die hem introduceerde bij de schilders Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Rousseau Camille Pissarro en Georges Seurat. In 1888 haalde hij Gauguin over zich bij Vincent te voegen die inmiddels in Arles woonde. Theo maakte in Parijs kennis met Andries Bonger, en leerde zo diens zuster Johanna Bonger kennen. Theo en Johanna trouwden op 17 april 1889 te Amsterdam. Het paar vestigde zich te Parijs, waar op 31 januari 1890 hun zoon Vincent Willem werd geboren. Op 8 juni bracht het jonge gezin een bezoek aan Vincent die zich inmiddels nabij Parijs in Auvers-sur-Oise had gevestigd. Met de kunsthandel ging het niet goed, en Theo overwoog – daartoe aangezet door Vincent – om voor zichzelf te beginnen. Op 6 juli kwam Vincent in Parijs op bezoek, en op 27 juli schoot hij zich in Auvers door zijn borst; misschien om Theo, die al een gezin en een oude moeder moest onderhouden, niet langer tot last te zijn, mogelijk was hij op de hoogte van de ziekte van Theo. Twee dagen later stierf hij, met Theo aan zijn sterfbed. Theo raakte in een diepe depressie. Hij werd opgenomen in een gesticht te Auteuil met als diagnose "acute maniakale opwindingstoestand met grootheidswanen en progressieve gegeneraliseerde paralyse". Op verzoek van zijn vrouw werd hij na enkele weken vanuit Auteuil overgebracht naar het Geneeskundig Gesticht voor Krankzinnigen te Utrecht waar hij op 18 november 1890 met een machtiging van zijn schoonvader werd opgenomen. Hij overleed hier op 33-jarige leeftijd, waarschijnlijk aan de gevolgen van syfilis en liet een zoon achter, Vincent Willem, de grootvader van cineast en columnist Theo van Gogh. Theo van Gogh werd aanvankelijk begraven op de Eerste Algemene Begraafplaats Soestbergen te Utrecht. Op 8 april 1914 werd hij herbegraven te Auvers-sur-Oise, naast Vincent.
