Die Kandidaten werden drei (ab der vierten Staffel vier) Teilnehmerkategorien (bis 24 Jahre, ab der vierten Staffel nach weiblichen und männlichen Kandidaten getrennt; ab 25 Jahren; Gruppen) zugeordnet. Jede Kategorie wird von einem der Jurymitglieder betreut. In der britischen Ausgabe der Sendung besteht die Jury aus Simon Cowell, der englischen Sängerin Cheryl Cole (sie ersetzte Sharon Osbourne, die bis einschließlich der 4. Staffel Jury-Mitglied war) und dem Musikmanager Louis Walsh (Westlife). In der vierten Staffel kam die australische Sängerin Dannii Minogue als viertes Jurymitglied hinzu.
