It was widely viewed before its BBC debut on video and in art-house cinemas, often using prints provided by Watkins, and the film won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 1966.

Die Fernsehanstalt rechtfertigte ihre Entscheidung folgendermaßen: „Die Wirkung des Filmes wurde von der BBC als zu entsetzend bewertet, als dass eine Ausstrahlung in Frage käme“. Doch auch mit dieser Entscheidung machte der Film sein Debüt als Video oder in Programmkinos, oftmals begleitet von unterstützendem Informationsmaterial von Watkins. Der Film gewann 1966 einen Oscar in der Kategorie Bester Dokumentarfilm.
