The band draws inspiration from folk and country music, particularly Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young and Johnny Cash, but also from other types of artists and musical styles such as Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, French chanson and Jacques Brel. Their sound is typically rich, with string arrangements and keyboards in addition to the standard rock instruments. In reviews the band's music is often described as melancholic or mellow, while Eckman's lyrics, concerning such themes as human relations, loneliness and restlessness, are often emphasized as poetic. The Walkabouts have achieved commercial success and a strong fanbase in Europe, where they have done promotion and extensive touring since early 1990s. They have occasionally even made it high on the record charts in countries such as Greece and Norway.

Chris conosceva superficialmente Carla Torgerson e la ritrova come collega di lavoro in una fabbrica di pesce in scatola in Alaska, dove tutti e due cercano di racimolare i soldi per pagarsi il college. Chris e Carla formarono quindi un nuovo gruppo, che prese in prestito il nome da un film di Nicolas Roeg del 1971: il gruppo iniziò a proporre la musica composta dai due ed incise un Lp, "22 Disasters" per la Necessity, di cui si sono perse le tracce. I brani composti per il successivo lavoro, "Weight and Rivers", saranno pubblicati solo come bonus tracks sul primo vero album del gruppo,"See Beautiful Rattlesnake Gardens", del 1988, su Pop Llama. La Sub Pop li mise sotto contratto, anche se la loro musica era completamente diversa da quella dei compagni di scuderia. Il rapporto con la casa discografica sarà tutt'altro che tranquillo e disteso e il clima influenzerà sia l'album successivo "Cataract" che l'EP "Rag and Bone". Segue l'album "Scavenger", con la collaborazione di Natalie Merchant e Brian Eno. La Sub Pop non rinnova il contratto, che viene però rilevato, dalla divisione europea dell'etichetta che fa capo alla Glitterhouse. Sarà proprio l'Europa che darà le maggiori soddisfazioni artistiche alla band. Europa nella quale si trasferiranno e che percorreranno con numerose tourné. Anche i loro dischi verranno pubblicati prima nel vecchio continente, alcuni solo qui e non negli Stati Uniti. Il 1993 fu un anno prolifico, videro la luce "New West Motel", disco molto più rock dei precedenti e "Satisfied Mind" una raccolta di cover che spaziano da Nick Cave a Patti Smith, a Gene Clark e John Cale, suonato con l'aiuto di ospiti illustri quali Peter Buck dei R.E.M. , Mark Lanegan degli Screaming Trees e Ivan Kral del Patti Smith Group. L'anno successivo Setting the Woods on Fire conferma la ricca vena compositiva dei due autori. A questo punto il gruppo è pronto per un salto di qualità: viene messo sotto contratto dalla Virgin tedesca che permette loro di realizzare un disco con un'intera orchestra: "Devil's Road". "Nighttown",del 1997, prosegue il discorso musicale, ma conclude il rapporto con la major. Il ritorno alla Glitterhouse è suggellato da "Trail of Stars" del 1999, nel quale si sentono i primi suoni elettronici. "The Train Leaves At Eight" saluta il nuovo millenio proseguendo il discorso di Satisfied Mind con pregevoli covers, tra le altre Disamistade di Fossati e De André. Nonostante la possibilità di sciogliere il gruppo sia sempre più concreta, dopo che Chris e Carla hanno posto fine alla loro relazione, "Ended Up A Stranger" del 2001 è, ancora una volta, un ottimo disco. I progetti solisti tengono occupati i due autori per qualche tempo e dobbiamo attendere il 2005 per ascoltare il nuovo album del gruppo. "Acetylene" è stato registrato dal vivo in studio, la musica è basata sulle chitarre elettriche ed i testi sono esplicitamente ancorati alla realtà del momento. Nel 2007 esce il live "Prague", concerto del 2005. Da segnalare anche le 2 raccolte di inediti e rarità "Death Valley Days" (1996) e "Drunken Soundtracks" (2003). Dal 1993, parallelamente all'attività del gruppo, Chris e Carla hanno realizzato altri progetti : 5 in coppia,3 Chris ed 1 Carla nel 2004. Tra questi "Life Full Of Holes", "Swinger 500", "High Flying Brave Dreamers" firmati Chris and Carla e "the Black Field" di Chris Eckman.
