- The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal is a wide-ranging book by Jared Diamond, which applies insights from biology, anthropology, and linguistics to questions such as why one species of big mammal came to dominate its closest relatives, such as chimpanzees, and why one group of humans came to dominate others. It also examines how asymmetry in male and female mating behaviour is resolved through differing social structures across cultures, and how first contact between unequal civilizations almost always results in genocide. The book ends by noting that technological progress may cause environmental degradation on a scale leading to extinction. The original title (1991) was The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: How Our Animal Heritage Affects the Way We Live, the current title was adopted with the third edition in 2006. In between, the second edition of 2004 was titled The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: Evolution and Human Life. Diamond has expanded on these themes in subsequent books: Guns, Germs and Steel (1997): why Eurasians came to dominate the Americans, part four of the book,, Why Is Sex Fun (1997): sexual selection, penis size, longevity, (parts 1 and 2) ' (2005): how civilizations over-exploit the environment and become extinct (part 5)
- Der dritte Schimpanse: Evolution und Zukunft des Menschen ist ein 1991 zunächst in englischer Sprache erschienenes Sachbuch von Jared Diamond. In seinem ersten populärwissenschaftlichen Buch stellt er vor allem aus evolutionsbiologischer Sicht die Besonderheiten des Menschen im Vergleich zu dessen nächsten Verwandten heraus – den Menschenaffen und besonders den Schimpansen. Er versucht diese zu erklären und analysiert, warum der Mensch sich zur beherrschenden Spezies entwickelt hat und welche Gefahren heute für das Fortbestehen der Menschheit bestehen. Die Titel des Buches soll verdeutlichen, dass der Mensch als dritte Art neben dem Gemeinen Schimpansen und dem Bonobo in die Gattung der Schimpansen eingeordnet werden müsste, wenn der geringe genetische Abstand als entscheidendes Kriterium betrachtet würde. Zu den entscheidenden Besonderheiten des Menschen gegenüber Schimpansen zählen der Lebenszyklus, das Sexualverhalten, die Sprache, die Kunst, die Landwirtschaft, der Drogenkonsum, der Völkermord und die Umweltzerstörung. Diamond greift auf Erkenntnisse der Evolutionsbiologie, Linguistik, Geschichte, Archäologie und weiterer Disziplinen zurück, um die Frage zu beantworten, wie diese Besonderheiten zu erklären sind. Themen des Buches hat Diamond in drei weiteren Büchern detailliert, darunter Arm und Reich, für das er 1998 den Pulitzer-Preis erhielt.

- Il terzo scimpanzé: ascesa e caduta del primate Homo sapiens è un saggio del biologo, evoluzionista e fisiologo statunitense Jared Diamond, originariamente pubblicato in inglese a Londra nel 1991. Diamond vi affronta due argomenti: come e perché gli esseri umani, in un breve periodo, si siano trasformati da semplice "mammifero di grossa taglia" a forza di dominazione del mondo; il grado in cui il nostro immenso progresso sia stato coniugato al seme dell', in particolare attraverso il genocidio ed il degrado ambientale (in ciò si riecheggia peraltro un noto tema di Simone Weil in Riflessioni sulle cause della libertà e dell'oppressione sociale - "ogni vittoria reca il germe di una futura disfatta" - anche se diverso è il contesto ed il significato che a ciò attribuisce la filosofa francese). Benché accessibile ad un pubblico non specialistico, Il terzo scimpanzé è comunque erudito, e traccia una teoria storica, evoluzionistica, biologica, linguistica e sociologica atta a ritrarre al contempo il successo ed il potenziale fallimento dell'umanità. In senso ampio, l'opera tratta schemi di determinismo ambientale di cui l'autore è un noto sostenitore (e talora anche un critico, come in parte nel più recente Collasso) ma questo orientamento non è assoluto: nel discutere casi di estinzione di massa, per esempio, Diamond sostiene apertamente la maggior responsabilità dell'azione umana, contrastando diverse teorie prevalentemente climatiche o ambientali. Ancorché Diamond sia certamente più famoso per il bestseller Armi, acciaio e malattie, l'opera che commentiamo meriterebbe sicuramente maggior attenzione da parte dei lettori, poiché è evidente come in questo libro l'autore condensi ed anticipi, in un certo qual modo, temi e contenuti di buona parte dei suoi scritti successivi.

Tytuł książki odnosi się do ludzi, jako do trzeciej odmiany szympansa. Dwie pozostałe to szympans zwyczajny i bonobo.
