Par la suite, ils signèrent avec Statik, où ils publièrent "Shock of Daylight" et "Heads and Hearts" (1985), moins marquants que les précédents. En sortit surtout le live "In the Hothouse", enregistré en août 1985 au Marquee à Londres, dont l'intensité frappe encore l'auditeur vingt ans après. Le groupe enregistra un sixième album, "Thunder up" pour le label belge Play It Again Sam, en 1987, puis se sépara. Ne s'étant vraisemblablement jamais remis de l'échec public de The Sound, Borland souffrait d'une dépression chronique et ne put assumer les dernières dates prévues. Il poursuivit une carrière solo avec cinq albums. Adrian Borland a mis fin à ses jours en avril 1999. L'œuvre de The Sound a été intégralement rééditée en CD par le label britannique Renascent. Adrian Borland, accompagné de membres de The Sound, a aussi réalisé des enregistrements sous un autre nom.
