Il tutto fu realizzato con l'idea di confezionare un personaggio dal forte impatto sul pubblico: il trucco pesante, i fumettistici costumi colorati e il capello rosso proto-punk diventavano quindi elementi necessari per creare una cornice mistica attorno alla figura di Ziggy, e quindi attorno a Bowie stesso, dato che in quel periodo le due entità erano pressoché indistinguibili. Dal punto di vista strettamente musicale, l'album è una raccolta di canzoni pop - il primo album più marcatamente pop di Bowie - costellato di successi come l'apocalittica Five Years, la nostalgica Lady Stardust o ancora le energiche Hang On To Yourself e Suffragette City. Troviamo inoltre i primi esempi di brani dotati di una marcata componente teatrale (Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, Moonage Daydream, Ziggy Stardust), in cui Bowie mette a frutto tutta l'esperienza accumulata nei primi anni di carriera nell'ambito del cabaret, del mimo, e delle forme alternative di comunicazione drammaturgica. I brani, indubbiamente di alto livello, mancano dell'equilibrio presente in Hunky Dory o dell'energia e del sound compatto del successivo Aladdin Sane, a confronto del quale questo lavoro appare piuttosto esile sia nella resa vocale che negli arrangiamenti. Tuttavia questo non ne scalfisce l'importanza storica: Ziggy rimane l'album che più ha influenzato le generazioni future di artisti che nella pantomima del suo eroe protagonista hanno trovato il primo esempio di teatro-rock nella storia della musica.
