"The Purloined Letter" is a short story by American author Edgar Allan Poe. It is the third of his three detective stories featuring the fictional C. Auguste Dupin, the other two being "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt". These stories are considered to be important early forerunners of the modern detective story. It first appeared in The Gift for 1845 (1844) and was soon reprinted in numerous journals and newspapers.

Es la última de las tres historias protagonizadas por el detective Auguste Dupin. El Prefecto de la Policía de París encomienda al detective Dupin y a su amigo, el narrador, la misión de resolver el misterio de una carta robada de las habitaciones reales, cuyo contenido afectará a una persona encumbrada, en caso de divulgación. El supuesto ladrón, es el ministro D. , al que la propia víctima lo ha visto cometer el hecho. Dupin se niega a tomar el caso, dando consejos al Prefecto de cómo revisar la propiedad del ladrón, a efectos de hallar la carta en cuestión, ya que han sido infructuosas las cuantiosas búsquedas efectuadas. Vuelve el Prefecto, derrotado, a la casa de Dupin, ya que continúan siendo inútiles todas sus investigaciones, ofreciéndole una recompensa por resolver el caso. Dupin acepta la recompensa, ya que la carta ya fue por él recuperada. Nuestro ingenioso detective partió de razonamientos lógicos para averiguar el escondite, y de un profundo análisis de la psicología del delincuente. No faltan los ingredientes de intriga, suspicacia, explicaciones del hilo conductor de sus razonamientos, para un desenlace simple, pero diferente.
