It approached The Walt Disney Company in 1980 to finance the first international Disney park. After Tokyo Disneyland was opened in 1983, the Oriental Land Company decided not to sell the park back to Disney. Walt Disney Attractions Japan pays Disney for character and likeness licenses, and Disney has leased their Imagineers to the company to design and build Tokyo Disneyland, as well as a second theme park, Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in 2001. In October 2008, the Oriental Land Company announced that it had shelved plans for a new Disney complex in Fukuoka, Japan. The company and Disney had spent more than a year studying an urban-style amusement facility for 2010 or later, but decided that the expected investment return would not justify the project. The firm said it would continue to explore possibilities for a new business, which might not involve Disney.

C'est une société d'économie mixte (en partie publique et privée) de développement économique. Elle est le résultat de l'association de la société de chemin de fer Keisei Electric, du fonds immobilier Mitsui Fudosan et de la préfecture de Chiba. Depuis 1999 OLC a créé des filiales d'abord lié à Ikspiari pour faciliter l'ouverture d'enseignes internationales n'ayant pas de filiales au Japon et assurer les services autour du complexe. En raison du succès de ce début de diversification OLC a créé d'autres filiales. Actuellement la société est un groupe de loisirs à l'image de la Walt Disney Company avec qui elle est liée. Les activités du groupe sont entre autres les parcs à thèmes, l'hôtellerie, la restauration, les boutiques Disney, les services liés au tourisme (entretien, cuisine, ... ) et internet. A titre indicatif le taux d'occupation des hôtels Disney dépasse 90% depuis l'ouverture du premier.
