The Opposition are a long running post-punk band from London, England that featured Ralph Hall, Marcus Bell and Mark Long, and mixed New Wave sounds with Reggae rhythms. Founded in 1979, The Opposition released their first single on the independent record label Double Vision records. This was called "Very Little Glory" which the NME (New Musical Express) reviewed and said that it was "a song recorded before its time".

Founded in 1979, The Opposition released their first single on the independent record label Double Vision records. This was called "Very Little Glory" which the NME (New Musical Express) reviewed and said that it was "a song recorded before its time". With the press picking up on the band, they switched from indie to major and secured a contract with the Ariola Record label in Europe. A single called "This Year " came out by Ariola, followed by the self produced "Breaking The Silence" album, and a French tour. In 1984 the band signs to Virgin Records offshoot Charisma Records and released firstly "Intimacy" in 1983. The " Promises" album was released a year later, and another album called "Empire Days" the following year. On these releases the band worked with Producer Kenny Jones. After a hiatus, when band members Marcus Bell and Mark Long recorded a more commercial sounding album under the name SO, the band regrouped and released the album "Blue Alice Blue" album, again recorded with Producer Kenny Jones. Also, a number of re-issues get the deluxe treatment with extra tracks on Virgin Records.

Markus Bell i Mark Long przenieśli się w tym czasie do Stanów Zjednoczonych i występowali jako duet So. Pod szyldem So wydali bardziej komercyjny album: Horseshoe In The Glove oraz single Are You Sure? i Would You Die For Me. Teledysk do utworu Are You Sure? został wybrany teledyskiem miesiąca w MTV, zaś singiel dotarł do 30. miejsca na amerykańskich listach sprzedaży. W 1990 po powrocie ze Stanów zespół wydał Blue Alice Blue (1990), która zawierała utwory, które nie ukazały się wcześniej, a także piosenki So, które bardziej pasowały do stylistyki The Opposition. Płyta War Begins At Home wydana w 1994 zbliżała zespół do stylistyki sceny manchesterskiej, łączyła jednocześnie tradycje różnych kultur (m. in. afrykańskiej). Kilka utworów stanowiło hołd dla ulubionych zespołów np. Love Love Love - dla The Beatles. Zespół mający niewielką popularność w Wielkiej Brytanii stał się znany w Polsce w połowie lat 80. gdy w radiu pojawiały się jego utwory (m. in. 5 minutes na Liście Przebojów Trójki w 1986). W latach 1993-1994 Marcus Bell z The Opposition współpracował z polskim zespołem Mancu. Był producentem muzycznym drugiej płyty Mancu Twój wstyd (1994) i wystąpił na niej gościnnie. Ostatnią płytą The Opposition była Blinder z 2003. W 2005 ukazała się płyta Farewell To Storyville zespołu Storyville, który tworzyli Mark Long i Lol Ford.
