The best known songs of The Ohio Express (including their best scoring single, "Yummy Yummy Yummy") were actually the work of an assemblage of studio musicians working out of New York, including singer/songwriter Joey Levine. Several other "Ohio Express" hits were the work of other, unrelated musical groups, including The Rare Breed, and an early incarnation of 10cc. In addition, a completely separate touring version of The Ohio Express appeared at all live dates, and recorded some of the band's album tracks.

Der Höhepunkt ihres Erfolges fand in den Jahren 1968/69 statt. In dieser Zeit brachten sie bei „Buddah Records“ mehrere Alben und jede Menge Singles heraus, z. B. „Sweeter than Sugar“, „Mercy“ und „Down at Lulus“. Ihr Leadsinger, Joey Levine, sang, wie immer gesagt wurde, als hätte er eine Menge Kaugummi im Mund. Verglichen mit anderen Bubblegum-Bands, wie z. B. der 1910 Fruitgum Company, den Archies, Music Explosion, Middle of the Road, der Partridge Family oder den Bay City Rollers, spielten sie härtere Musik. Der Anfangsriff ihres Erfolgshits „Yummy, Yummy, Yummy“ wurde von vielen Bands übernommen, bis hin zu Judas Priest. Ohio Express spielt noch heute und man kann sie buchen, wenn auch von der Originalbesetzung nur noch der Gitarrist Douglas Grassel bei besonderen Gelegenheiten dabei ist.
