On the The WB network on September 29, 2001. The characters and plot were derived from the film, but the series could not replicate its success. The poor quality of the animation disappointed fans of the special effects-laden movie. It was retooled and rechristened The Mummy: Secrets of the Medjai for its second season, which began on February 15, 2003. Although the quality is considered to have improved between the first and second seasons, the show failed to find an audience and was cancelled on June 7, 2003. Reruns of the show air on Toon Disney. The entire series was released on DVD in America R1 in three volumes on July 22, 2008.

Os personagens e boa parte dos cenários são procedentes dos dois primeiros filmes da franquia, tornando o desenho animado em um "spin off" (filme ou série baseada em uma série precedente). Porém The Mummy: The Animated Series não teve o mesmo desempenho com os fãs da mesma forma que tiveram os filmes anteriores, muitos fãs na época se queixaram pela falta de efeitos na série e também a falta de histórias mais construtivas, foi por esse motivo que a série se estendeu para uma segunda temporada que estreou em Fevereiro de 2003 se chamando The Mummy: Secrets of the Medjai que na opinião dos críticos e fãs foi melhor que a primeira. No Brasil a série não é mais exibida em nenhum canal, porém foi exibida na Fox Kids (atual Jetix) em meados de 2002 e mais tarde na Rede Globo em 2005 no programa TV Globinho. Atualmente as duas temporadas estão sendo exibidas no Toon Disney e estão disponíveis em três DVD's nos EUA desde Julho de 2008.
