| - The Libertines were an English rock band. Formed in London in 1997 by frontmen Carl Barât (vocals/lead guitar) and Pete Doherty, the band also included John Hassall and Gary Powell for most of its recording career. Part of what was described as the garage rock revival of that time, one of the aptly named 'The' bands and spearheading this movement in the UK, the band was centred on the song-writing partnership of Barât and Doherty. The band gained some notoriety in the early 2000s. Although their mainstream success was initially limited, their profile soon grew, culminating in a #2 single and #1 album in the UK Charts. In December 2004, their self-titled second album was voted the second best album of the year by NME magazine. Both of their full-length LPs were produced by Mick Jones, of the British punk band The Clash.In spite of their critical success, the band's music was often eclipsed by its internal conflicts, often stemming from Doherty's addictions to crack cocaine and heroin, which ultimately resulted in the breakup of the band. Doherty has since claimed that the breakup of the band had been due to relationship difficulties between Barât and himself that were not related to his drug addictions. The members of The Libertines have gone on to form new bands with varying degrees of commercial and critical success. (en)

Cambia formazione fino al 2001, quando prende l'assetto definitivo. L'anno successivo, con la produzione di Mick Jones, esce il primo album, Up the Bracket, accolto molto positivamente da pubblico e critica. Il look e la musica dei quattro diventa immediatamente un fenomeno di massa in tutta la Gran Bretagna. Il successo è inarrestabile, nonostante i problemi di droga del cantante e chitarrista Pete Doherty, il quale nel 2003 viene arrestato per aver rubato proprio in casa del suo compagno di band. Nel 2004 esce il secondo album, che viene ancora giudicato ottimo dalla critica di settore. Il gruppo gode di molto consenso in Inghilterra, ma dopo l'uscita dell'album Doherty lascia definitivamente la band. La band si scioglie ufficialmente nel 2005. - ザ・リバティーンズ (The Libertines) は、イギリス・ロンドン出身のインディー・ロックバンド。のちのイギリスのバンドブームの土台を作った面で功績が大きいといえる。ガレージロック・リバイバル・ムーブメントと言われるバンドの1つ。バンドの中心は、作詞・作曲を共同で行っていたカール・バラーとピート・ドハーティ。2000年代前半から注目されるようになり、はじめはメインストリームでの成功は制限されていたが、イギリスチャートでアルバム1位、シングル2位を獲得するバンドとなった。2004年12月にリリースされた2ndアルバム『リバティーンズ革命』は、NMEの年間ベストアルバムで2位に選ばれた。アルバム2枚のプロデューサーは、イギリスのパンク・ロックバンド、ザ・クラッシュのミック・ジョーンズ。しかしながらバンド内部では、しばしば軋轢が生じた。原因はドハーティのドラッグ中毒（クラックコカインとヘロイン）であることが多く、結局バンドは解散してしまう。以来ドハーティは、解散の原因はバラーと自分との関係が悪くなったためであって、自分のドラッグ中毒は関係しないと主張している。その後、リバティーンズのメンバーは新しいバンドでそれぞれ活動している。 (ja)

- The Libertines é uma banda inglesa que acabou em 2005. Curiosamente, os libertinos conseguiram o seu merecido reconhecimento com uma ajuda dos Strokes. Ninguém queria saber daquela coisa suja, cheia de gás, imposta pelos ingleses, mas o "novo rock" dos The Strokes chegava aos ouvidos de todo o mundo, firmando no cenário rocker mundial uma leva de novas bandas, como o The Hives na Suécia e The Vines na Austrália. Mas apesar das semelhanças com essas bandas, muita gente é radicalmente contra esse tipo de comparação, elevando o The Libertines ao status de “novo The Clash” – o que por sua vez desperta a ira de muitos outros radicais de plantão. Diferentemente dos seus similares, o Libertines tinha um pouco de Blues sessentista no seu som, dando um ar mais sombrio. Deixando os rótulos de lado, o fato é que “Up The Bracket”, o ‘debut’, chegou às lojas, em 2003, cercado de polêmicas. Isso porque o guitarrista e vocalista Pete Doherty é um encrenqueiro de primeira e vive sendo notícia por suas internações e fugas em clínicas de reabilitação, além de notas mais bizarras como o assalto que realizou na casa de seu próprio companheiro de banda, Carl Barat. A formação se completa ainda com o baterista Gary Powell e com o baixista John Hassall, que julgam por aí apenas como figurantes, escondendo o trabalho fundamental que os mesmos exercem na banda. No ano seguinte vem o segundo trabalho, auto-intitulado. “The Libertines”, assim como o disco de estréia, foi produzido por Mick Jones, ex-guitarrista do The Clash, sendo que o engenheiro de som foi Bill Price, que já gravou clássicos como “London Calling”, do próprio The Clash e “Appetite for Destruction”, dos Guns n’ Roses. As letras da banda falam basicamente de drogas, amores e da conturbada relação entre Barât e Doherty, que, sem a menor cerimônia, discutem seus problemas nas próprias músicas do grupo. Mas como as brigas ficaram cada vez mais constantes, Pete Doherty anunciou sua saída do grupo em Maio de 2004. Mesmo assim, a dupla vive se encontrando e se separando, sem que ninguém saiba ao certo como eles irão se apresentar em algum show, por exemplo. Para não correr riscos, o The Libertines chamou o reforço do guitarrista Anthony Rossomando, enquanto que Doherty excursiona com o Babyshambles. O grupo ainda foi escalado para tocar na segunda edição do Tim Festival, em São Paulo, no mês de Novembro. The Libertines é uma das bandas que vem conseguindo maior espaço e destaque na cena Rock internacional. A banda faz parte do novo movimento “quanto mais simples, desencanado e despojado melhor”, que conta com nomes como The White Stripes entre outros. O álbum homônimo, o segundo da carreira, segue essa filosofia ao limite e mais parece que a banda não ensaiou muito antes de entrar em estúdio. Com ares de improviso, vocais desafinados (o que é o refrão daquela “Don’t Be Shy”?) e guitarrinhas estridentes. “The Libertines” é a continuidade de “Up the Bracket” e o regresso da música aos primórdios, onde tudo era feito mais com vontade e instinto. Muita gente pode torcer o nariz, mas, por mais fácil que possa parecer, fazer um som desse tipo exige um certo talento e competência. Um histórico problemático, cheio de confusões, brigas e drogas, apenas fez com que o nome da banda se tornasse mais popular na cena e chamasse a atenção da mídia. O guitarrista e vocalista Pete Doherty, por exemplo, deixou os outros falando sozinho assim que o disco foi lançado. Carl Barât, o outro líder, segurou a bronca sozinho e tem se apresentado sem o companheiro pelo mundo, tocando inclusive aqui no Brasil, recentemente. Mas é claro que por trás da aparência adolescente do som, existe toda uma jogada da indústria fonográfica. O álbum foi produzido por Mick Jones, guitarrista do The Clash, e o engenheiro de som foi Bill Price, que já gravou bandas como Guns n’ Roses, além do próprio The Clash. (pt)
