The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band was one of the most noteworthy jazz big bands formed outside the United States. It was formed in 1961, when, with the help of producer Gigi Campi, the US drummer Kenny Clarke and Belgian pianist and composer Francy Boland and ex-Ellington bassist Jimmy Woode brought together several jazz musicians of note. Although based in Europe, the band was truly multinational, also having several US musicians in the line-up.

Sie hatte zwei Schlagzeuger, neben der afro-amerikanischen Bebop-Legende Kenny Clarke, der in den fünfziger Jahren das Jazz-Schlagzeug revolutioniert hatte, den weißen Briten Kenny Clare. Viele bekannte US-Jazzmusiker der Bebop-Generation spielten in der Formation, z. B. die Saxophonisten Johnny Griffin, Herb Geller und Sahib Shihab (vor der Konversion zum Islam Ed Gregory) oder der Bassist Jimmy Woode. Sie wurden durch bekannte europäische Musiker wie den schwedischen Posaunisten Ake Persson, den bosnischen Trompeter Dusko Goykovich, seinen deutschen Kollegen Manfred Schoof und die britischen Saxofonisten Ronnie Scott und Derek Humble ergänzt. Nach einem Unfall Humbles mit schwerwiegenden Folgen (1967) nahm Tony Coe, der für den österreichischen Tenorsaxophonisten Carl Drewo in die Band gekommen war, Humbles Platz ein. 1968 arbeitete das Orchester mit der dänischen Schlagersängerin Gitte Hænning zusammen, die das Publikum durch eine Schallplattenveröffentlichung als hervorragende Jazz-Vokalistin überraschte.
