- The Itchy & Scratchy Show is a show within a show in the animated television series The Simpsons. It usually appears as a part of the The Krusty the Clown Show, watched regularly by Bart and Lisa Simpson. Itself an animated cartoon, The Itchy & Scratchy Show depicts an anthropomorphic blue mouse, Itchy, who constantly kills an anthropomorphic black cat, Scratchy. The cartoon first appeared in the Tracey Ullman Show short "The Bart Simpson Show", which originally aired November 20, 1988. The cartoon's first appearance in The Simpsons was in the 1990 episode "There's No Disgrace Like Home". Typically presented as 15-60 second-long cartoons, the show is filled with over-the-top violence. The Simpsons also occasionally features characters who are involved with the production of The Itchy & Scratchy Show, including Roger Meyers, Jr. , who runs the studio and produces the show. Itchy and Scratchy are based on the cartoons Tom and Jerry and Herman and Katnip, and their names were inspired by "Pixie and Dixie", who were mice on the cartoon show Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks. The cartoons have since become popular among the show's writers and animators and are often added when an episode needs expanding. As the shorts became popular with fans, the writers decided to have full episodes that centered around the production of The Itchy & Scratchy Show and featured multiple shorts. The first was "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge", which was a commentary on censorship. Other episodes to feature the show include "Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie", "The Front", "Itchy & Scratchy Land", "The Day the Violence Died" and "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show".

Appaiono solo in trasmissioni televisive; il loro nome originale è Itchy & Scratchy . Il cartone va in onda all'interno dello spettacolo di Krusty il Clown, trasmissione per bambini, e anche per questo è molto seguito e amato da tutti i bimbi di Springfield, in particolare da Bart e Lisa, che al termine di ogni puntata scoppiano in una fragorosa risata. Anche Homer, tuttavia, ne apprezza la crudele comicità e lo guarda volentieri, divertendosi sempre. Anche i Simpson stessi hanno collaborato alla serie: Bart e Lisa come sceneggiatori di alcuni episodi, tra cui La piccola bottega del barbiere degli orrori (essendo minorenni, usarono nonno Abraham come prestanome). Non si sa chi abbia creato Grattachecca; comunque, Roger Meyers Sr. commise un duplice plagio ai danni di Lampwick e si appropriò di entrambi i personaggi. La prima apparizione del gatto risale al 1928, in un cartone di cui era protagonista unico: il noiosissimo Quel gatto felice. Esso sarebbe caduto nel dimenticatoio, se un anno dopo non fosse stato affiancato dal topo psicopatico Fichetto. Senonché Marge, contraria alla violenza nei cartoni animati, riesce a far trasmettere, in luogo di quello, un episodio nel quale i due nemici bevono tranquilli una limonata (anche la sigla iniziale viene cambiata per l'occasione, con Grattachecca e Fichetto che invece di bastonate si scambiano regali). Nei pressi di Springfield esiste anche il Parco Divertimenti di Grattachecca e Fichetto, dove il tema predominante è ovviamente la violenza. È meta di molti bambini che in una puntata mandano in corto circuito tutti i robot del parco, costringendo la gente a scappare. In uno speciale di Halloween dei Simpson, Bart e Lisa riescono addirittura ad entrare nella TV di casa per vedere da vicino i loro eroi. Sennonché, vedendoli ridere a crepapelle, Grattachecca e Fichetto si coalizzano per ucciderli. Prima che sia troppo tardi, Homer li tira fuori dall'apparecchio televisivo. I due personaggi sono stati anche i protagonisti di una pellicola, banalmente intitolata Grattachecca & Fichetto - Il film, che ha avuto un successo straordinario: Bart, a causa di una punizione inflittagli dal padre, è stato l'unico abitante di Springfield a non averlo visto. Solo quando ebbe cinquant'anni, ormai nominato giudice della Corte Suprema, il padre gli permise di assistere al tanto atteso show. Tutti gli episodi del cartone sono preceduti da una brevissima sigla, segue il testo della canzoncina:
