These books are extremely detailed, often analysing a scrap of paper to provide the full evolution of two or even three different versions of a passage that were rewritten over each other. Christopher Tolkien has documented the history of the writing of the Middle-earth stories in as much detail as his father documented the fictional history of Middle-earth itself. However, numerous unpublished texts are still known to exist in the Bodleian and Marquette University libraries and in other papers held by individuals, such as the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship. The first five books track the early history of The Silmarillion and related texts. Books six to nine discuss the development of The Lord of the Rings; book nine also discusses the Númenor story in the form of The Notion Club Papers. Books ten and eleven return to The Silmarillion material, including the Annals of Beleriand and Annals of Aman. Book twelve discusses the development of the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings and assorted writings from the last years of Tolkien's life. Algunos de sus textos corresponden a versiones tempranas de algunos de los trabajos publicados por su padre, mientras que otros son material inédito. Estos libros son sumamente detallados, al punto de documentar trozos de papel que fueron modificadas infinidad de veces con muchas notas a pie de página. Christopher Tolkien ha documentado la historia de la escritura de los relatos de la Tierra Media con tanto detalle como su padre documentó la historia fantástica de la Tierra Media. Ce projet, initié par le troisième fils de J. R. R. Tolkien, Christopher, est un recueil de textes écrits par l'auteur du Seigneur des anneaux tout au long de sa vie, mais jamais publiés auparavant. Il s'agit d'analyser la génèse de toute son œuvre à travers des versions plus anciennes de ses textes, des essais, ou encore des poèmes. Un treizième volume est paru en 2002, The History of Middle-earth: Index, reprenant ensemble tous les index des douze précédents volumes. Une partie de ces histoires est très ancienne comparativement au Seigneur des anneaux, tant dans la narration que dans la vie de J. R. R. Tolkien. Certains textes se contredisent entre eux, leur rédaction s'étalant sur des décennies. Ils montrent souvent l'évolution de différentes histoires et langues. Leur forme définitive devait un jour être publiée sous la forme du Silmarillion, que Tolkien n'a jamais pu finir et que son fils Christopher a compilé et publié, faisant un choix parmi eux. Il expose ici les textes qu'il a utilisés pour « créer » ce livre de son père et donne accès à des textes inédits sur la genèse du monde et des langues imaginaires, des poèmes et lais, des textes sur le Seigneur des anneaux, etc. Depuis la parution de The Peoples of Middle-earth, des inédits de Tolkien continuent d'être publiés, mais dans le cadre des fanzines Vinyar Tengwar et Parma Eldalamberon. Ces deux périodiques étant dédiés à l'étude des langues construites de Tolkien, les textes inédits qu'ils proposent sont généralement plus complexes que ceux de l'Histoire de la Terre du Milieu.
  • The History of Middle-earth (La storia della Terra di Mezzo, abbreviato in HoMe) è una serie di dodici volumi (più uno di indici), che contengono ed analizzano molti scritti di J.R.R. Tolkien su Valinor e sulla Terra di Mezzo. Il progetto, portato a termine dal terzo figlio di Tolkien, Christopher, è una raccolta di testi scritti dall'autore de Il Signore degli Anelli, e mai pubblicati prima. Molto del materiale contenuto consiste in versioni più antiche di storie e personaggi già presenti nelle opere dello scrittore, ma sono presenti anche scritti del tutto nuovi, come saggi (per esempio quello sulle lingue contenuto nel quinto tomo della serie The Lost Road and Other Writings) o poemi. Questi volumi, per la maggior parte editi soltanto in lingua inglese (i primi due sono stati tradotti in italia come Racconti ritrovati e Racconti perduti) tra il 1983 ed il 1996, sono estremamente dettagliati, e si soffermano spesso sull'evoluzione di trame anche marginali, e sono stati rimaneggiati da Christopher, ai quali ha spesso aggiunto commenti e puntualizzazioni, per permettere una migliore leggibilità (alcuni risalgono agli anni '20). Nonostante l'enorme quantità di scritto qui contenuto, vi sono ancora molti testi inediti, conservati in forma manoscritta nelle biblioteche della Oxford University e della Marquette University, oltre a quelli detenuti dai privati.

De delen werden achter elkaar uitgegeven van 1983 tot 1996. In de boeken wordt het schrijven van De Silmarillion en The Lord of the Rings blootgelegd door middel van vele manuscripten, geschrapte hoofdstukken en tekstfragmenten. Ook voorziet Christopher de teksten van commentaar om enige vragen en moeilijkheden uit te leggen. Het zijn met name deze veranderingen waarop in het boek de nadruk ligt. Zo leest men hoe de verhalen uitgegroeid tot wat ze uiteindelijk zijn geworden. Meestal wordt de serie verdeeld over twaalf boeken maar er is ook een uitgave waarin de hele serie verdeeld is over drie boeken.
