Se le suele designar como paradigmático del sonido de The Cure posterior a Pornography, iniciado por los temas incluidos en Japanese Whispers, y hasta cierto punto continuado por The Top. Este LP supuso la apertura del mercado Norteamericano para The Cure. También es mencionable el hecho de que es el primer disco (sin contar con el recopilatorio Boys Don't Cry), del que se extrajeron dos singles, que se convirtieron en éxitos comerciales. Robert Smith ha afirmado supuestamente sobre este álbum que fue la primera grabación de The Cure en la que los miembros de la banda fueron capaces de interpretar fielmente las ideas que guardaba en su cabeza. Este álbum será re-editado en Agosto de 2006. La edición habrá sido remasterizada digitalmente, e incluirá diversas demos y temas en directo.

Un album résolument pop, qui permettra véritablement au groupe de se faire connaître dans le monde entier, et varié (guitare hispanique de The Blood, plus électrique de Push... ), même si The Cure ne se départit pas de ses chansons spleen et mélancoliques (Sinking). Robert Smith écrit et compose seul l'intégralité des chansons parmi lesquelles In Between Days et Close To Me qui sortiront en singles et deviendront des tubes internationaux, bénéficiant de clips réalisés par Tim Pope qui seront très remarqués. La version de Close to Me présente ici ne contient pas la section de cuivres, qui a été rajoutée sur la version sortie en single. La rythmique jouée au piano sur Six Different Ways a été utilisée une première fois par Robert Smith en 1984 sur le titre Swimming Horses, de l'album Hyaena de Siouxsie & the Banshees. La phrase "The Head on the Door" est dérivée des paroles de "Close to me" ("Like my head on the door was a dream"). Le titre de cet album rompt la tradition du groupe, qui était de nommer les disques du titre du dernier morceau (à l'exception de "Japanese Whispers" qui était une compilation). A Night Like This a été reprise en 1995 par James Iha pour les Smashing Pumpkins. Cette reprise figure sur le maxi de Bullet With Butterfly Wings issu du coffret The Aeroplane Flies High. Le 14 août 2006 est publiée une édition remastérisée avec un deuxième CD contenant des titres inédits et des versions démos ou en concert des morceaux de l'album et des singles.
