- The Four Seasons (since 1967, known off and on as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons--although not shown that way on any of their hit records), is an American pop and rock group. They also had a sound somewhat reminiscent of doo-wop, although they were not thought of as a doo-wop quartet. By the mid 1960s, The Four Seasons had become an internationally famous rock-and-roll group. The Vocal Group Hall of Fame has stated that it was the most popular white rock band before The Beatles. In 1960, the group known as The Four Lovers evolved into The Four Seasons, with Frankie Valli as the lead singer, Bob Gaudio on keyboards and tenor vocals, Tommy DeVito on lead guitar and baritone vocals, and Nick Massi on bass guitar and bass vocals (Massi was replaced in 1965 by Charles Calello, who was in turn replaced later in 1965 by Joe Long on bass guitar and bass vocals). The official name of the organization is the Four Seasons Partnership, formed by Gaudio and Valli after a failed audition in 1961. While singers, producers, and musicians have come and gone, Gaudio and Valli remain the group's constant (with each owning fifty percent of the act and its assets, including virtually all of its recording catalog). Gaudio no longer plays live, leaving Valli the only member of the group from its inception that is currently touring. The Four Seasons (group members 1960–1965) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and it joined the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. It is one of the best-selling musical groups of all time, having sold 175 million records worldwide.

In den 60ern waren die Four Seasons auch weiterhin mit vielen Singles erfolgreich, darunter Bye Bye Baby (Baby, Goodbye), Girl Come Running, Let's Hang On!, Don't Think Twice (It's Allright), Working My Way Back To You, Opus 17, I've Got You Under My Skin, Tell It To The Rain, Beggin', Can't Take My Eyes Off You, C'mon Marianne, und Will You Love Me Tomorrow. 1969 schufen sie dann das Konzeptalbum The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette, in das sie psychedelische Elemente einbauten, was der Kritik ganz und gar nicht gefiel. Auch die Single Patch Of Blue floppte. 1970 kam das Album Half & Half auf den Markt, auf dem nur die eine Hälfte aus Four-Seasons-Songs bestand, die andere Hälfte waren Frankie-Valli-'Solo'-Produktionen. DeVito zog sich 1970 von der Band zurück und wurde von Bob Grimm ersetzt, außerdem kam der Drummer Gary Wolfe neu dazu. Es erschien das Doppelalbum Edizione D'Oro. Der weiße Ableger von Motown, Mowest, nahm die Band Anfang 1972 unter Vertrag. Allerdings wurde die Band erst 1975 wieder aktiv. Gaudio und Valli engagierten Don Ciccone, Gerry Polci, John Paiva und Lee Shapiro. 1975 bekamen sie mit Who Loves You dann noch einen Hit zustande. 1976 folgten December '63 (Oh What A Night) und Silver Star sowie die Alben Who Loves You, The Four Seasons Story und Greatest Hits. Als weder das Beatles-Cover We Can Work It Out (Ende 1976) noch das Album Helicon (1977) in die Charts kamen, verabschiedete sich Valli von der Band. Mai 1980 begann eine Reunion-Tour der Four Seasons, an der Polci, Ciccone, Larry Lingle und Jerry Corbetta teilnahmen. Die Platte Reunited (1981) floppte und auch 1985, wieder mit Valli, wurde die LP Streetfighter kein großer Erfolg. 1990 wurden die Band in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. In Europa kamen sie mit dem Sampler The Very Best Of 1992 noch einmal in die Top 10 der Alben-Charts. 1994 kam eine Überarbeitung von December '63 auch noch einmal in die Hitparaden. Danach erschienen keine weiteren Songs, auch wenn sich die Band offiziell noch nicht getrennt hat.
