The Color of Money is a film adapted from a 1984 novel by American writer Walter Tevis, continuing the story of pool shark Eddie "Fast Eddie" Felson, with Paul Newman reprising his role from the movie version of The Hustler. In addition to Newman, the film also stars Tom Cruise as Fast Eddie's protege and rival Vincent Lauria, plus Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Helen Shaver and John Turturro. The screenplay was written by Richard Price, and the film was directed by Martin Scorsese, featuring an original score by Robbie Robertson. The title is a reference to the traditional green cloth of a pool table being reminiscent of American currency notes.

Premiar a Paul Newman por esta película fue como la justicia aplicada al reo de manera tardía, ya que hacerlo por este film, y no por el mismo papel en su interpretación de El buscavidas 25 años antes, parece un Oscar a la nostalgia, un Oscar de reconocimiento a ese papel realizado en 1961 y que no fue premiado incomprensiblemente, aunque ello no hace sino corroborar que Newman hace este film, al igual que el interpretado 25 años antes, suyo y unicamente suyo. El color del dinero se eleva a la categoría de cine de culto si se entiende la dimensión de esta "segunda" parte dirigida por el magnifico director de cine Martin Scorsese. Ya que aquel afortunado que vea o haya visto las dos partes de la historia de este personaje, observará que no serían más que líneas inertes en otro guión de Hollywood sin la interpretación de uno de los más grandes actores que ha habido y habrá en el mundo del celuloide, Paul Newman. La historia de Eddie Felson no tendría el menor sentido si no hubiese sido interpretada por este genio daltónico de ojos azules, que despliega en este film todo aquello por lo que ya había sido casi reconocido con anterioridad en seis ocasiones a la precedente, y por la que, por fin, fue premiado merecidamente. Como curiosidad de la cinta, en la película aparecen muchos grandes maestros del billar de los 80, como Steve Mizerak, Jimmy Mataya, Grady Mathews y Keith McCready, además de un "cameo" de Iggy Pop.
