The Cinematics are an alternative rock band from Scotland, originally from the small Highland town of Dingwall- near Loch Ness- and currently based in Glasgow. The original line-up of Scott Rinning (vocals, guitar), Adam Goemans (bass), Ramsay Miller (guitar) and Ross Bonney (drums) formed in Glasgow in late 2003, although they already knew each another from school in their hometown. The band were signed to TVT Records in 2005 after playing at an "In the City" showcase gig in Manchester.

The band were signed to TVT Records in 2005 after playing at an "In the City" showcase gig in Manchester. Their debut album A Strange Education was produced by Simon Barnicott and Stephen Hague, and released on March 6, 2007. Later in 2007, they released their Live Sessions EP, which was available for download exclusively on iTunes. The band has, to date, enjoyed success predominately in the USA and continental Europe. In early 2008, it was reported that TVT Records was suffering financial difficulties and was forced to file for Chapter 11/Bankruptcy. The label and its assets were purchased by New York-based digital-distribution company, The Orchard. Much of the TVT roster was dropped, but The Cinematics’ recording contract was retained. Around the same time, the band parted company with Ramsay Miller, who was replaced by Larry Reid, formerly singer and guitarist with Glasgow band, Blitzhoney. Reid had previously played with the band live during an earlier tour of Germany. In their Myspace blogs, the band reported at various stages that they were writing and self-producing their second studio album, despite suggestions that it would be produced by Richard Gottehrer. New single "Love and Terror" was released in August 2009 and the album of the same name is due for release on 28th September 2009. Live shows suggest that the band may have a more raw sound than that found on their debut album, although there have been examples of synthesisers being used in addition to guitars, bass and drums. The band’s website confirms that they will be touring Europe extensively in the Autumn/Winter of 2009 and in their Myspace blogs they have stated that they expect to tour North America again in early 2010.
