  • The Byrds were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (aka Jim McGuinn) remaining the sole consistent member until the group disbanded in 1973. Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones for a short period of time (1965–66), The Byrds are today considered by critics to be one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. Initially, they pioneered the musical genre of folk rock, melding the influence of The Beatles and other British Invasion bands with contemporary and traditional folk music. As the 1960s progressed, the band was also influential in originating psychedelic rock, raga rock, and country rock. In addition, the band's signature blend of clear harmony singing and McGuinn's jangly twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar has continued to be influential on popular music up to the present day. Among the band's most enduring songs are their cover versions of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There is a Season)", along with the self-penned originals, "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", "Eight Miles High", "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Ballad of Easy Rider" and "Chestnut Mare". The original five-piece line-up of The Byrds consisted of Jim McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clarke. However, this version of the band was relatively short-lived and by early 1966, Clark had left due to problems associated with anxiety and his increasing isolation within the group. The Byrds continued as a quartet until late 1967, when Crosby and Clarke also departed the band. McGuinn and Hillman decided to recruit new members, including country rock pioneer Gram Parsons, but by late 1968, Hillman and Parsons had also exited the band. McGuinn, who by this time had changed his name to Roger after a flirtation with the Subud religion, elected to rebuild the band's membership and between 1968 and 1973, he helmed a new incarnation of The Byrds, featuring guitarist Clarence White among others. McGuinn disbanded the then current line-up in early 1973, to make way for a reunion of the original quintet. The Byrds' final album was released in March 1973, with the reunited group disbanding soon afterwards. Several ex-members of the band went on to have successful careers of their own, either as solo artists or as part of groups, such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young or The Desert Rose Band. In the late 1980s, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke both began touring as The Byrds, prompting a legal challenge from McGuinn, Crosby, and Hillman over the rights to the band's name. As a result of this, McGuinn, Crosby, and Hillman performed a series of reunion concerts as The Byrds in 1989 and 1990, and also recorded four new Byrds' songs. In January 1991, The Byrds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an occasion that saw the five original members performing together for the last time. McGuinn, Crosby, and Hillman still remain active but Gene Clark died of a heart attack in 1991, and Michael Clarke died of liver failure in 1993.
  • The Byrds oli vuosina 1964–1973 vaikuttanut yhdysvaltalainen rockyhtye, jonka musiikilliseen tyyliin sisältyivät folkrock, psykedeelinen rock ja loppuvaiheessa country rock. Yhtye perustettiin vuonna 1964 Los Angelesissa, jolloin siihen kuuluivat Jim McGuinn (myöhemmin tunnettiin nimellä Roger McGuinn), David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark ja Michael Clarke. The Byrdsia pidetään yhtenä rockin merkittävimmistä yhtyeistä.

Samtidig var også egne komposisjoner, som Gene Clarks «I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better», «Here Without You», «She Don't Care About Time», «Set You Free This Time», «The World Turns All Around Her» og Roger McGuinns «It Won't Be Wrong» kjente. Gruppen fortsatte videre utover 1960-tallet med å gi ut en rekke album, og med albumet Younger Than Yesterday som kom i 1967 fikk de to mindre hits, «So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star» og en cover på Bob Dylans «My Back Pages». Trommeslager i originalbesetningen, Michael Clarke døde i 1993.

  • A sample of "Chestnut Mare", which had originally been composed by Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy as part of a country rock musical the pair were developing. The clip highlights the interplay between McGuinn's 12-string Rickenbacker and Clarence White's country-style acoustic and electric guitar playing.
  • An excerpt from the song "Old John Robertson", highlighting The Byrds' use of phasing and flanging effects on The Notorious Byrd Brothers album.
  • An excerpt from the intro of "Eight Miles High", demonstrating the John Coltrane-influenced, free form guitar playing of Roger McGuinn.
  • An excerpt from "Kathleen's Song", highlighting the prominent orchestra and horn overdubs that producer Terry Melcher controversially added to the Byrdmaniax album, allegedly without The Byrds' consent.
  • A sample of David Crosby's "Everybody's Been Burned", which has been described as "one of the most haunting songs in the Byrds' catalogue."
  • An excerpt from the Gene Clark penned "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", featuring Clark on the lead and Roger McGuinn and David Crosby on backing vocals.
  • An excerpt from the McGuinn and Clark-penned song "The Only Girl I Adore". Recorded at World Pacific Studios in early 1964, the song represents the earliest surviving recording by the original three-piece line-up of The Jet Set .
  • An excerpt from the Gene Clark penned song "Full Circle", which for a time provided The Byrds' reunion album with its working title.
  • An excerpt from The Byrds' recording of "Ballad of Easy Rider", which was written as the theme tune for the 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider. Although primarily penned by Roger McGuinn, the song did feature uncredited songwriting contributions from Bob Dylan.
  • An excerpt from an outtake version of the song "Tulsa County", highlighting Clarence White's use of the StringBender device. This guitar accessory was designed by drummer Gene Parsons and fitted to White's Fender Telecaster, allowing him to emulate the sound of a pedal steel guitar. The StringBender became a major characteristic of The Byrds' sound during White's time with the band.
  • An excerpt from The Byrds' version of "Goin' Back", which saw the band introducing the sound of the pedal steel guitar into their music for the first time. The "swooping" sound of the pedal steel can be clearly heard towards the end of this music sample.
  • A sample of The Byrds' recording of "All I Really Want to Do", illustrating the ascending melody progression that the band utilized in the song's refrain.
  • An excerpt from the Gram Parsons and Bob Buchanan penned "Hickory Wind", one of three songs on Sweetheart of the Rodeo to feature Parsons as lead vocalist.
  • As the lead single from Sweetheart of the Rodeo, "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" became the first full-blown country rock release by The Byrds.
  • An excerpt from the country-influenced Chris Hillman composition "Time Between", which foreshadowed The Byrds' later exploration of the country rock genre.
  • An excerpt from "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star", highlighting the trumpet playing of Hugh Masekela and the satirical nature of the song's lyrics.
  • An excerpt from The Byrds' cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man", highlighting the band's clear harmony singing and Roger McGuinn's jangly, twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar playing.
