Poprvé komiks vycházel na pokračování v belgických novinách Le Petit Vingtième v letech 1934 a 1935, v Česku vyšel poprvé v roce 2004 v nakladatelství Albatros. Když Hergé začal pracovat na příběhu, který se měl odehrávat v Číně, obrátil se na něj páter Gosset z univerzity Lovani, kde učil čínské studenty a bál se že Hergého práce bude vyznívat stejně jako to, co říkaly sdělovací prostředky. Proto Gosset seznámil Hergého s Čang Čong-ženem, který jej zasvětil do opravdové Číny a tak Modrý lotos vypadá podle tehdejší skutečnosti. Čang a Hergé zůstali přátelé, kreslíř mu proto vytvořil v Modrém lotosu menší roli (mnohem významnější roli mu Hergé udělil v albu Tintin v Tibetu).

Se publicó por entregas en el suplemento Le Petit Vingtième entre el 9 de agosto de 1934 y el 17 de octubre de 1935, a un ritmo de dos páginas semanales en blanco y negro. La primera edición en álbum, también en blanco y negro, apareció en 1936 en la editorial Casterman. La primera edición en color, en la misma editorial, data de 1946. La acción se desarrolla principalmente en China, en la ciudad de Shanghái. El título está tomado del nombre de un ficticio fumadero de opio en la misma ciudad. El Loto Azul es la segunda parte de una historia iniciada en el álbum anterior, Los cigarros del faraón, aunque puede leerse de forma independiente. Tiene una gran relevancia dentro de la historia de la serie, por ser la primera vez que su creador, Hergé, se preocupó por documentarse exhaustivamente acerca del tema tratado, para lo que contó con la ayuda de un estudiante chino, Zhang Chongren.
