O grupo se formou na mesma vizinhança de Yiewsley, a este de Londres. Inicialmente chamados de Thunderbirds, encurtaram o nome ao entrar em uma competição de bandas, e, emboram não tenham vencido, decidiram mantê-lo assim - uma decisão que teria consequências importantes mais tarde. Depois de sua primeira aparição televisiva, os Birds chamaram a atenção dos executivos da Decca. Gruppen spelade den hårdare, psykedeliskt influerade popmusiken som kom att kallas "freakbeat". Deras musik har många likheter med t. ex. bandet "pretty things". Soundet karaktäriseras av de långsammare och mer betonade trumbeatsen, samtidigt som gitarristen tenderar att spela mer psykedeliskt influerade riff snarare än det vanliga ackordakompanjanget, som var standarden inom den tidiga "modpopscenen". Att The Birds inte blev stora berodde på den amerikanska gruppen The Byrds. År 1965 kom The Byrds version av Bob Dylans låt "Mr. Tambourine Man" ut som gick upp på listorna runt jordklotet. Att gruppen hette samma sak som den brittiska gruppen gjorde att namnet "Birds" tillhörde The Byrds, och på så sätt blev The Birds utkonkurrerade, det fanns helt enkelt inte plats för två "Birds".
