The title of the album ("The Age of Plastic") and the title track ("Living in the Plastic Age") allude to the 1924 novel and consequent 1925 silent movie The Plastic Age. The band name "The Buggles" alludes to that movie's director Wesley Ruggles.

I testi sono a tratti molto interessanti: Kid Dynamo parla dell'effetto negativo dei mass media sulla fantasia e l'immaginazione umani; I Love You, Miss Robot della dipendenza dalla tecnologia. Nonostante la registrazione originale sia ovviamente analogica, anche la qualità del suono è ampiamente al di sopra degli standard dell'epoca. L'album fu pubblicato in seguito al grande successo del singolo Video Killed the Radio Star, ai primi posti nelle classifiche di molti paesi. Altri tre brani dell'album furono proposti come singoli (Living in the Plastic Age, Clean Clean e Elstree) ma con meno successo. Video Killed the Radio Star e The Age of Plastic procurarono una grande visibilità a Horn e Downes, che poco tempo dopo la pubblicazione del loro album di debutto furono invitati da Chris Squire a unirsi alla storica band progressive degli Yes. L'album che ne risultò, Drama, ricorda per qualche aspetto Age of Plastic, anche nei testi: la tecnologia torna in brani come Machine Messiah o Into the Lens (I Am a Camera).
