The 3rd and the Mortal (alternative spelling The Third and the Mortal) were a Norwegian experimental metal-band, founded in the city of Trondheim, Norway, in 1992 by Rune Hoemsnes, Finn Olav Holthe, Geir Nilssen, Trond Engum and singer Kari Rueslåtten. The band started out as a doom metal band mixing distorted guitars and heavy drumming with clean guitars and female vocals from Kari Rueslåtten.

Damit waren The 3rd and the Mortal, noch vor The Gathering (1995) eine der ersten Bands, die den dunklen, schwerfälligen Doom-Metal-Sound mit klarem Frauengesang paarten. 1993 kam eine erste EP mit dem Namen Sorrow auf den Markt. Das Debütalbum der Band,Tears Laid in Earth, erschien 1994. Schon im Folgejahr verließ Rueslåtten dann The 3rd and the Mortal und wurde durch Ann-Marie Edvardsen ersetzt. 1996 erschien Painting on Glass, gefolgt von In This Room im Jahr danach. 1998 zog sich die Band dann für einige Jahre aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück und veröffentlichte 2002 ein neues Album, Memoirs, mit Aufnahmen, die sie in den vorhergehenden Jahren gemacht hatte. 2004 erschien eine Best-of unter dem Namen EP's & Rarities.

Posteriormente la banda se metió en terrenos más experimentales al grado de utilizar desde la música Jazz, sampleos electrónicos e instrumentos nativos como el Didgeridoo de los aborígenes australianos, incorporándolos en su delicada línea de metal atmosférico. Su primer producción fue un EP titulado "Sorrow" realizado en en 1993, seguido por el álbum "Tears Laid In Earth" de 1994. Posteriormente Kari Rueslåtten se separa de la banda e inicia su carrera solista en 1995, por lo que la banda le da la bienvenida a Ann-Mari Edvardsen como su nueva vocalista y produciendo junto con ella el EP "Nightswan" en 1995, el álbum "Painting on Glass" de 1996 y el álbum "In this room" de 1997 considerado por sus fans como su mejor material hasta la fecha. Tras la salida de Edvardsen, la banda regresa en 2002 con un nuevo álbum titulado "Memoirs", cuyo contenido es como siempre de excelente calidad y adelantándose a la corriente musical con su fórmula experimental, manteniendo su postura subterránea para deleite de su pequeño pero selecto grupo de fans dispersos por el mundo y que les sigue desde sus inicios. En dicho album cuentan con la participación de nuevos vocalistas como Kirsti Huke, Andreas Elvenes, así como la participación en la programación electrónica de Snorre Ruch (amigo de Burzum y ex músico de sesión con Mayhem) miembro de la banda Thorns. De gothic stijl wordt verruild voor new age met een metalondertoon, waarbij Ann-Mari veel stemregisters gebruikt. Met de cd 'In this room' neemt de stijl een lichtelijke jazzrichting. Door de vele stijlwisselingen, kent de band ook vele wisselingen van fans. Na een stilte van een verschillende jaren komt de band zonder Ann-Mari, maar met een groot aantal gastmusici en vocalisten terug, met de cd 'Memoirs'. Er volgt een kleine tour door Duitsland en Nederland. Na weer een lange stilte volgt de cd 'Projcet Bluebook - Decade of Endeavour' met een aantal liveversies, live experimenten en een tweetal nieuwe songs.
