It has been an independent, family-owned company since its founding in 1949. Thames & Hudson's World of Art series is especially well-known. In particular, A Concise History of Painting: From Giotto to Cézanne by Michael Levey, originally published in 1962, is a classic and authoritative introduction to the history of European art from the beginnings of perspective in Italy to the foundations of modern art at the start of the 20th century.

Forlaget ble grunnlagt av Walther og Eva Neurath i 1949 og er fortsatt familieeid. Navnet er valgt etter Thames river og Hudson river for å markere tilknytning på begge sider av Atlanterhavet. Hovedsetet er i London, med datterselskaper i New York (Thames & Hudson USA) og Paris. Emner de spesielt er inne i omfatter arkeologi, arkitektur, dekorativ kunst/brukskunst, historie, kunst og kunsthistorie, fotografi, religion og spiritisme/åndsfilosofi. Enkelte barnebøker er også gitt ut. Thames & Hudsons World of Art serie er velkjent. De gir ofte ut bøker til større internasjonale vandreutstillinger og minneutstillinger for kjente kunstnernavn og samarbeider da gjerne med forlag i andre land.

Thames), płynącej przez Londyn oraz rzeki Hudson River, przepływającej przez Nowy Jork. W zamyśle założycieli nazwa miała wyrażać łączność, pomiędzy dwoma brzegami Oceanu Atlantyckiego, spinając Europę z Ameryką. Siedziba centrali firmy znajduje się w Londynie, zaś dwóch siostrzanych firm: w Nowym Jorku – Thames & Hudson USA, oraz w Paryżu - Éditions Thames & Hudson. Firmy ściśle współpracujące – podległe, znajdują się w Melbourne, Hongkongu i Singapurze. Założeniem wydawnictwa jest szczególna dbałość o zawartość merytoryczną wydawanych książek przy jednoczesnej ich wysokiej jakości pod względem cech zewnętrznych; jakości papieru, doskonałości zdjęć i ilustracji oraz jakości opraw. Specjalnością wydawnictwa są publikacje z dziedzin: sztuk pięknych i sztuki użytkowej, wzornictwa, dekoratorstwa i projektowania, fotografii, historii i archeologii, podróży i kulturoznawstwa. Obecnie nakładem wydawnictwa ukazuje się około 180 nowy tytułów każdego roku. Spora część wydawanych pozycji dotyczy historii, kultury i chronologii starożytnego Egiptu.
