The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), a consortium of institutions and research projects, maintains and develops a standard for the representation of texts in digital form. Lo standard è stato creato soprattutto per i testi letterari del passato, al fine di poterli conservare per il futuro. Ma non solo: i testi codificati in questo modo sono: portabili; facilmente archiviabili; facilmente gestibili con strumenti informatici. Lo standard TEI è gestito da un Consorzio di istituzioni internazionali di ambito linguistico e letterario. Il Consorzio TEI emana delle direttive (Recommendations) che garantiscono la validità scientifica delle codifica dei testi effettuate secondo lo standard. Il progetto internazionale che sta alla base della codifica TEI ha preso vita nella seconda metà degli anni Ottanta: in quel periodo non esisteva nessun modello di codifica normalizzato dell'informazione testuale in formato elettronico. Nel 1987 le tre maggiori associazioni mondiali che utilizzano tecnologie digitali negli studi sulle scienze umane, la Association for Computers and the Humanities (ACH) la Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) e la Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing (ALLC) si sono riunite in un consorzio per metter ordine alla mole intricata di modelli e di linguaggi di rappresentazione esistenti; tale progetto ha poi preso il nome di Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), e ad esso hanno iniziato a collaborare gruppi di studiosi provenienti da diversi paesi. Lo scopo della TEI è dunque quello di definire uno standard di codifica specifico per i testi letterari, e di normalizzare i formati di memorizzazione dell'informazione testuale, al fine di consentire una migliore gestione informatica dei documenti. Per realizzare questo progetto gli sviluppatori della TEI hanno assunto come linguaggio di base per la descrizione dei documenti l'SGML e successivamente la sua evoluzione, l'XML; come insieme di caratteri è stato adottato l'ISO 646. Dal 1989, dopo un'accurata analisi condotta su molti testi letterari, è stata definita una vasta e complessa Document Type Definition (DTD), le cui caratteristiche sono state pubblicate in un libro uscito nel 1994 dal titolo: "Linee guida per la codifica e l'interscambio del testo elettronico" (Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange) (TEI P3). La struttura della DTD ha subito molte revisioni, ma la versione a tutt'oggi disponibile può considerarsi definitiva.
