- Ein Testpilot ist ein erfahrener Pilot, der ein Fluggerät oder ein Avioniksystem erprobt. Der Testpilot erfliegt dabei die Grenzbereiche des Fluggeräts: Es werden in einem genau festgelegten Testprogramm unter Anderem maximale und minimale Geschwindigkeiten erflogen, maximale Startgewichte ausgetestet, sowie das Überzieh- und Trudelverhalten des Fluggeräts erprobt.

In the 1950s, test pilots were being killed at the rate of about one a week, but the risks have shrunk to a fraction of that, thanks to the maturation of aircraft technology, better ground-testing and simulation of aircraft performance, and, lately, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to test experimental aircraft features. Still, piloting experimental aircraft remains more dangerous than most other types of flying.

Wyszkolenie pilota doświadczalnego oraz nadanie mu uprawnień to proces długi i kosztowny, z tego też względu za granicą istnieją odpowiednie ośrodki kształcące pilotów w tej specjalności. W Polsce pilotów doświadczalnych dzieli się umownie na: pierwszej klasy (dopuszczenie do wszelkich lotów doświadczalnych na statkach powietrznych zgodnych z posiadanymi uprawnieniami) drugiej klasy .
