Lo diferencian del speedcore poniendo como límite la estructura del “doble bombo” además de la suciedad y sonidos terroríficos. Su principal característica es que se distorsionan los leads o hoovers y se usan muchas disonancias. En cuanto a su sonido "brutal" esta dado por la distorsión del kick, difícil de lograr sin que destroce los otros sonidos, por lo que requiere de cierta habilidad. Como ejemplo se podría decir que en Holanda llamarían Terror a un tema a 250BPM con un compás de 4x4, y Speedcore a un tema a 400BPM y compás de 8x4. Se pueden encotrar temas de entre 120 y 600 bpm.

Vergeleken met andere Hardcore-genres zoals breakcore - dat gebruik maakt van de invloeden van de breakbeat, en speedcore, dat zich concentreert op de versnellende beats per minuut - is terror een lastig te definiëren muzieksoort omdat elke luisteraar een andere interpretatie van de muziek heeft. De meest voorkomende omschrijving is dat terror bepaalde geluiden synthetiseert om ze een terroreffect te geven, regelmatig met een flinke korrel zout genomen. Vaak worden er aan terror zogenoemde "scherp klinkende" geluiden toegevoegd. Dit laatste effect onderscheidt de terreur van andere muziekstromingen binnen de hardcore. Szybkość utworów terrorcore wynosi od 250 BPM wzwyż, do czego dochodzą sample niczym z horrorów, (zazwyczaj rozciągnięte i bardzo klimatyczne) oraz niekiedy dzwięki niczym z wielkich fabryk, brzmiących jak tarcie się metalu. Wokal ogranicza się zazwyczaj do krótkich wstawek typu fuck you i tym podobnych. Do całego obrazu trzeba jeszcze dodać potężną ścianę basu i potwornego hałasu i mamy cały obraz terrorcoru. Do prekursorów tego gatunku muzycznego należą między innymi Drokz (który to jest autorem tejże nazwy) Mindcontroller czy Delta 9, jak i niemieckie Gabba Front Berlin, która zapożyczyła nazwę zespołu od nurtu gabber.
