Since 2000, Blanchard has served as Artistic Director at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He lives in the Garden District of New Orleans with his wife and four children.

Ende der 1980er Jahre hatte er ein eigenes Quartett mit dem Blakey-Sideman und Alt-Saxofonisten Donald Harrison (Alben Black Pearl, Crystal Stair). Sie nahmen u. a. 1986 Eric Dolphy/Booker Little Remembered, Vol. 1, 2 auf mit derselben Rhythm Section wie diese. 1993 erschien sein Album The Billie Holiday Songbook, 1999 Wandering Moon mit Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland. Für das letztere Album wurde er von Down-Beat-Lesern zum Künstler und Trompeter des Jahres gewählt. Mit dem Brasilianer Ivan Lins nahm er 1996 The Heart Speaks auf (Grammy Nominierung für „Best Latin Jazz Performance“). Blanchard schrieb und spielte im Soundtrack für viele Filme, insbesondere in mehreren Spike Lee Filmen, u. a. in Do the right thing, Mo better blues 1990 (das ihm eine Grammy-Nominierung einbrachte), Malcolm X 1992 (das er auch zu einer Suite verarbeitete), Jungle Fever 1991, Summer of Sam 1999 und in dem Dokumentar-Film When the Levees broke über die Katastrophe seiner Heimatstadt New Orleans im Hurricane Katrina 2006, in dem er auch mitspielt.
