Tenebrae (Latin for 'shadows' or 'darkness') is a Christian religious service celebrated by the Western Church on the evening before or early morning of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, which are the last three days of Holy Week. The distinctive ceremony of Tenebrae is the gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited. In the Roman Rite of the Roman Catholic Church the Tenebrae readings and psalms are those of Matins and Lauds.

Weitere Bezeichnungen der Karmette sind Tenebrae oder Finstermette. Dieser Begriff bezieht sich auf die Tatsache, dass die Mette (Matutin) in der Dunkelheit (lat. Tenebrae) abgehalten wird.

L'office porte le nom de ténèbres puisqu'il est chanté normalement très tôt le matin dans l'obscurité plus ou moins complète. Ces offices revêtent un caractère de deuil, de tristesse et de douleur. Toutes les parties ordinaires des matines est omis (invitatoire, gloria Patri à la fin des psaumes, hymne, capitule, bénédiction, etc). L'Eglise s'occupe exclusivement à gémir sur les pêchés du genre humain et à compatir aux tourments du Rédempteur. Le choix des psaumes met sous les yeux les douleurs de la Passion de Jésus-Christ, le Jeudi Saint, au Jardin des Oliviers; le Vendredi Saint, devant les tribunaux et au Calvaire; le Samedi Saint, au Sépulcre. Les leçons du 1er nocturne sont tirées des Lamentations de Jérémie où le prophète pleure la ruine et la destruction de Jérusalem et de son temple. Compte tenu de la longueur de l'office, on chante en général seulement le 1er nocturne chaque jour.
