In addition to the construction of the ten new buildings was an expansion of Tiannamen square, and a campaign of art commissions to decorate the majority of the buildings by the time of their completion. Two subsequent art campaigns for these buildings were conducted in 1961, and 1964-1965. The architecture of the buildings was a mixture of three main tendencies: modernism as it had developed as the international style, the Socialist realism of Stalinist architecture, and a form of historicism based on traditional Chinese architecture. The buildings were designed by members of the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, working with the Beijing Planning Bureau and the Ministry of Construction. The Ten Great Buildings transformed Beijing by adding monumental architecture becoming of capital cities such as Washington, DC; Paris; or Moscow.

De var del av et arkitektur- og urbanismeinitiastiv knyttet til den nasjonale ideologiske og økonomiske kampanjen som gikk under navnet Det store spranget fremad, og ble ferdigstilt i løpet av ti måneder, tidsnok for selve jubileumsdagen den 1. oktober 1959. I tillegg til å reise disse ti byggverkene ble det også foretatt en stor utvidelse av Den himmelske freds plass, og man lot en mengde kunstkommisjoner se til at et flertall av bygningene ble utsmykket innen minnedagen. To påfølgende kunsteriske kampanjer/krafttak for disse bygningene ble foretatt i 1961 og 1964-1965. Bygningenes arkitektur var en blanding av tre retninger: modernismen som den var blitt utviklet som internasjonal stil, den sosialistiske realismes stil som den nedfelte seg i stalinistisk arkitektur, og en form for historisme som var basert på tradisjonell kinesisk arkitektur. Bygningene var tegnet av medlemmer av Beijings institutt for arkitektonisk design, i samarbeid med Beijings planlegginsbyrå og med Konstruksjonsministeriet.
