A temporal database is a database with built-in time aspects, e.g. a temporal data model and a temporal version of structured query language. More specifically the temporal aspects usually include valid-time and transaction-time. These attributes go together to form bitemporal data. Valid time denotes the time period during which a fact is true with respect to the real world. Transaction time is the time period during which a fact is stored in the database.

Valid time denotes the time period during which a fact is true with respect to the real world. Transaction time is the time period during which a fact is stored in the database. Bitemporal data combines both Valid and Transaction Time. Note that these two time periods do not have to be the same for a single fact. Imagine that we come up with a temporal database storing data about the 18th century. The valid time of these facts is somewhere between 1701 and 1800, whereas the transaction time starts when we insert the facts into the database, for example, January 21, 1998. It is possible to have timelines other than Valid Time and Transaction Time, such as Decision Time, in the database. In that case the database would be called a multitemporal database as opposed to a bitemporal database. However, this approach introduces additional complexities such as dealing with the validity of (foreign) keys.

Es existieren jedoch einige Entwürfe, die im wesentlichen Erweiterungen relationaler Datenbanken darstellen. Insbesondere der in Arbeit befindliche zukünftige Standard SQL/Temporal, der ursprünglich als Teil des SQL-Standards SQL3 bzw. SQL:1999 vorgesehen war, soll die Ansätze der derzeit existierenden Entwürfe vereinen und eine umfassende Unterstützung zur Speicherung temporaler Daten bieten. Allerdings ist die Standardisierung aufgrund von Meinungsverschiedenheiten ins Stocken geraten, und SQL/Temporal ist auch nicht im derzeit aktuellen Standard enthalten.

Valid time těchto faktů je někde mezi roky 1700 a 1799, kdežto transaction time začíná okamžikem vložení faktů do databáze (například 21. ledna 1998) a nikdy nekončí (obvykle klíčové slovo forever).

Entre las diversas propuestas de implementación, la más extendida es TSQL2. Especificando más profundamente, los aspectos temporales normalmente incluyen tiempo de validez y tiempo de transacción. La combinación de estos dos atributos forman un dato bitemporal. Tiempo de validez indica el periodo de tiempo en el cual un hecho es verdad en el mundo real. Tiempo de transacción indica el periodo de tiempo en el cual un hecho está guardado en la base de datos. Dato Bitemporal es la combinación del tiempo de validez y el tiempo transaccional. Estos dos periodos de tiempo no tienen que ser idénticos para un mismo hecho. Imagine una base de datos temporal guardando datos sobre el siglo veinte. El tiempo de validez sobre esos hechos estará comprendido entre el año 1901 y el año 2000, sin embargo el tiempo transaccional empezará cuando insertemos esos hechos en la base de datos, por ejemplo, 25 de diciembre del 2006.
