It was convicted in 2005 on charges of defamation, in what the RSF described as a political trial. TelQuel now has a Moroccan Arabic edition, Nichane. On 1 August 2009, the Moroccan government seized an edition of TelQuel, following its inclusion of an opinion poll conducted jointly with French newspaper Le Monde and looking at the performance of King Mohammed VI over the first ten years of his reign. Although 91% viewed his performance favourably, the authorities considered this to be an unsuitable topic for coverage and promptly banned publication of the survey, provoking a furious reaction from the press and Web users.

Après l'arrestation arbitraire du journaliste marocain Rachid Niny, directeur de publication du premier quotidien du pays Al Massae, le 28 avril 2011, Telquel a publié un éditorial dans lequel le directeur de publication du Magazine exprime sa solidarité avec Rachid Niny et son rejet de son arrestation arbitraire, ce en dépit des divergences entre Telquel et Al Massae et les attaques répétées de Niny contre Telquel et son directeur de publication que ce soit l'ancien (Ahmed Reda Bnechemsi) ou l'actuel Karim Boukhari. Fin 2010, son directeur Ahmed Réda Benchemsi a vendu ses parts dans Presse directe (société éditrice du magazine) et a quitté le pays pour les États-Unis.
