Edward (Ted) Burgin was a professional footballer who played for Sheffield United between 1949-57 as a goalkeeper. He was nicknamed "The Cat" by his teammates. He started his career with Alford Town, but asked for his release in 1948 and was signed by United after undergoing successful trials. His debut came in a Second Division game against Swansea City on 1 September 1949 and despite being only 5 feet 7 inches, he was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in England while with United.

He was an ever-present in 3 League seasons, 1950-51, 1952-53 and 1953-54. In 1958, he joined Leeds United making 58 appearances for the West Yorkshire side. In 1960, he joined Rochdale and made 207 appearances for The Dale. He toured Australia with the F.A. team in 1951 and was England reserve for a match with Austria in 1953. He was also in England's World Cup squad in 1954, although he did not feature in any of their matches.
