Eine gegensätzliche Auffassung von Technikentwicklung findet sich im Sozialkonstruktivismus. Obwohl der Technikdeterminismus innerhalb der Techniksoziologie als widerlegt gilt, prägt er immer noch die populäre Vorstellung von der technischen Entwicklung wie auch, im Anschluss an den Technikdeterministen Marshall McLuhan, weite Teile der Medientheorie.
