Umaga returned to a playing role for Toulon in the second half of the 2008–09 season, and at the same time announced that he would not continue as head coach beyond that season. He retired as a player at the end of the season, and remains at Toulon as assistant coach for backs under Philippe Saint-André.

Il s'en suivra sept victoires en huit matchs pour le R.C.T. , la seule défaite correspondant au seul match manqué par Umaga sur la rade, le 25 novembre face à Tarbes au Stade Mayol (16-28), pour une blessure contractée au mollet le week-end précédent face au Racing. Il marque un autre essai contre Dax, tout aussi décisif que celui contre Lyon puisqu'il permet encore une fois aux rouges et noirs de battre un concurrent direct à la montée (20-16). Son aventure toulonnaise en tant que joueur, se termine le 7 janvier 2007 après le match face à Grenoble (32-10) dans un stade Mayol qui affiche une nouvelle fois complet pour l'occasion. Le 31 mai 2007, Mourad Boudjellal président du Rugby club toulonnais le nomme manager général pour une durée de deux ans et il entame, lors de la saison 2007-2008, une reconversion comme entraîneur. Le RCT, alors en Pro D2 est très ambitieux et recrute de nombreuses "pointures" de l'hémisphère sud qui, encadré par Umaga, permettent le retour du club au premier plan. La saison du retour en Top 14 est difficile, malgré les arrivées de Sonny Bill Williams et Jerry Collins. Conséquence ou non, le club annonce le 26 janvier 2009 que Tana Umaga redevient joueur professionnel (soit un an et demi après son dernier match au sein des Hurricanes de Wellington), son remplacement par Philippe Saint-André au poste d'entraineur pour la saison 2009-2010 étant déjà acquis.
