Le réseau a été fondé en 1960 par la mise en réseau des stations de télévision Télé-Métropole (CFTM-TV Montréal), CJPM-TV Saguenay et les stations du réseau Pathonic (CFCM-TV Québec, CHLT-TV Sherbrooke et, plus tard, CHEM-TV Trois-Rivières et CHOT-TV Hull). Suite à une vague d'acquisitions, la plupart des stations sont la propriété de la même entreprise depuis la fin des années 1980. De vocation généraliste, il a rejoint un très large public par des émissions fédératrices qui rejoignent la famille et les femmes de 25 à 54 ans (le créneau publicitaire le plus recherché au Québec). Parmi ses grands succès des dernières années, notons Le Banquier, Occupation Double et Star Académie, dont la troisième édition atteignait des cotes d'écoute record de plus de 2,5 millions d'auditeurs, les séries dramatiques Fortier, Les Poupées russes, Le Négociateur, Annie et ses hommes, tout comme les comédies Histoires de filles, Caméra café et KM/H ou l’émission de divertissement Drôle de vidéo. Le réseau obtient par ailleurs depuis quelques années un certain succès en information, dépassant en audimat les émissions de Radio-Canada, son principal concurrent. TVA a longtemps utilisé le slogan : « TVA, le sens de la télé ». Son slogan actuel est : « TVA, c'est vrai ».
