- TAN Books & Publishers is a traditionalist Catholic book distributor and publisher based in Rockford, Illinois. It was founded in 1967 by Thomas A. Nelson; the company's name is taken from Nelson's initials. Following financial problems which led to bankruptcy, TAN was acquired by the North Carolina-based Catholic publisher Saint Benedict Press. At the time of acquisition Conor Gallagher, Vice President of Publishing at Saint Benedict Press, said: “We welcome TAN Books and Publishers as a great resource for traditional Catholic products and we look forward to providing a continuation of its existing publishing plan. This acquisition will make way for an increase in new titles and an ability to bring back into print many of the favorite titles which have been on permanent back-order as a result of TAN’s uncertain future. ” New titles, post-acquisition by St Benedicts, include a range of Douay-Rheims Bibles (including a leather-bound version), putting the company in direct competition with other traditional catholic publishers, including Baronius Press who publish a leather-bound edition and Loretto, who describe themselves in their publicity as “the Douay-Rheims Bible People,” and publish a range of products using the Douay translation. TAN Books & Publishers should not be confused with the Tennessee-based publisher, Thomas Nelson.
